RIMINI: Drawing Biennial, fourth edition inaugurated

The fourth edition of the Drawing Biennale was inaugurated in Rimini. The new edition of the cycle of exhibitions located in multiple locations in the historic center is dedicated to the theme of travel. Here’s what awaits visitors.

From the travel notebooks of nineteenth-century painters to contemporary ones, from the eighteenth-century engravings of Piranesi to the drawings of Morandi and Fontana, passing through animated films, the Drawing Biennale returns to Rimini. The fourth edition is entitled “Return to the Journey, from the Grand Tour to science fiction”.

Everything revolves around the theme of travel, interpreted as a restart, inspiration and contamination between past and present.

Until July 28, 12 simultaneous exhibitions will illuminate, with a thousand drawings, some symbolic places of the city: Castel Sismondo, Palazzo del Fulgor, the Gambalunga Library and the city Museum.

At the City Museum there are several exhibitions: “The Treasure of Westmorland. The drawings taken from the Grand Tour”, curated by Massimo Pulini and José Marìa Luzòn in the spaces of the City Museum. Paintings, works, musical scores, archaeological finds, bought by a group of English baronets on their Grand Tour in Italy, are an intact and very precious heritage bought by the King of Spain and destined for the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, where it still stands, well guarded but invisible.

We continue in the Sala delle Teche with the exhibition curated by Eleonora Frattarolo “The best journeys of our life” which displays notebooks and travel diaries by 15 artists focused on the geographies of various journeys and transits in memorable landscapes. The Saletta Bilancioni hosts the exhibition curated by Alessandra Bigi Iotti entitled “Journey in a room”, which displays the collection of Lia and Daniele Rivi whose peculiarity lies in the fact that the drawings of the major artists of the twentieth century are framed in precious ancient frames dating back to the period from the 16th to the 18th century. Cartoon Club exhibits in the Sala Gruau the personal exhibition “I hold the position” by Simone Massi, designer and animator, while “Rimini sommersa” – the “underwater” drawings by Samuele Grassi, an illustrator from Rimini – represent Rimini-Atlandide, where above and below the surface of the water you can glimpse the city’s monuments. The New Wing of the City Museum hosts “Cantiere Disegno”, dedicated to the contemporary: 27 artists and more than 300 drawings.

At the Gambalunga Library you can visit three exhibitions: the first entitled “Caves, waterfalls and ravines. The Grand Tour of nature” (curated by Massimo Pulini and Franco Pozzi) will contain watercolors and drawings made from the second half of the eighteenth century by artists who draw attention to nature.

The second exhibition, “The drawings of the Océanie”, curated by Rosita Copioli and Alessandro Giovanardi, focuses on the splendid illustrations of this explorer and skilled designer, preserved in the Des Vergers Fund. The third exhibition in the Library is dedicated to the designer Thayaht (1893-1959) entitled “Futuro Presente”.

Moving to Palazzo del Fulgor you will be able to see, for the first time, a selection of the rare paper originals created for the first color feature film “The Rose of Bagdad” including rodovetri, backdrops as well as a Modenese collection of drawings.

Also in the Palazzo at the Fellini Museum, the exhibition “Cinema and freedom. I Carteles de Cine cubani” (by Luigino Bardellotto, Adolfo Conti and Patrizio De Mattio), brings together the posters created by graphic designers involved, in the 1960s, in redesigning the posters of European films.

We continue to Castel Sismondo where in the Isolde Wing, the exhibition “Everything spoke so vividly” exhibits 24 artists selected from the most prestigious French collection of contemporary drawing, the FRAC Picardie of Amiens.
