What better opportunity to gain electoral publicity than to take part in the walk, complete with pink t-shirt and sneakers “Treviso in pink” which attracted more than ten thousand women to the capital of the Marche? It matters little if the event promoted by Lilt, the Italian League for fight against tumors, had the sole aim of raising funds for research against the disease, with the motto “prevention is living”. The Northern League MEP Rosanna Conte, Venetian and seeking re-election in Brussels, decided to take advantage of the “free-paced running” event to display a sign with an unmistakable message: “ConTe in Europa”. As a corollary, the lawyer who lives in Caorle, drew a winking heart, to seek consensus among the pink people who occupied the historic center of Treviso.

The public appearance could not go unnoticed, also because the sign was shown while Rosanna Conte spoke into the microphone shortly before the women started walking through the city streets. A real departure from the nature of the event, now in its tenth edition, which constitutes an absolutely apolitical moment of celebration. But it was also an act of internal belligerence League. Among the authorities who held an institutional intervention there was also the deputy mayor Alessandro Maneraalso a candidate for the League, whose name is in ninth place on the list, while that of his colleague Conte is in fourth position.

Approached by journalists, Manera commented: “I limited myself to saying a few institutional words…”. Not even the lawyer Conte talked about electionsbut the invitation to be voted on that she showed was so explicit that the organizers (apparently also through the intervention of the Northern League mayor of the same name Mario Conte) then had the sign.

The controversy mounted until the interested party, at the end of the demonstration, released a statement: “I realize that it was a slip, certainly completely involuntary. I apologize to the organizers and participants, because far be it from me to want to take advantage of such an opportunity to get high election campaign”. He added that his speech had not had any political content.

The news of her participation in the Treviso walk appeared on her Facebook site, with several photos portraying her together with the women in pink, but without any reference to the propaganda incident. It was not enough to avoid the critical comments of two PD city councilors. Antonella Tocchetto: “A year ago there were elections for the mayor but no one took advantage of it. Something scandalous, never seen before: an event like the ‘Treviso in pink’ which serves to raise awareness of the fight against cancer cannot be used to campaign”. Carlotta Bazza: “The MEP Conte took advantage of the greetings to campaign for himself. Now we’ve come to this.”
