Fiumicino, a boat sinks and another runs aground on the rocks: the Coast Guard intervenes

Double intervention by the Fiumicino Coast Guard. Today, Sunday 5 May, a pleasure boat sank near the IP industrial platforms while last night a grandfather and his granddaughter found themselves in difficulty near Fiumara, with their boat ending up on the rocks.

A boat with the grandfather and his granddaughter ends up on the rocks: it is the third in a month

On the sunken pleasure boat in the late morning CP 831 intervened in the body of water in front industrial IP platforms. The terminal support unit raised the alarm and witnessed the rapid sinking of the unit.

The three occupants, of Italian nationality, ended up in the water and were recovered by another unit that was passing by at the time, then returning them to the ground. In the meantime, the Port Authority staff has arrived. The hull remained half sunk with the bow exposed.

Fortunately, the accident in the water had no consequences for the occupants of the boat, which was then recovered by the owner at his own expense, while the causes that led to the sinking will be clarified during the investigation.

The recovery of the grandfather and grandson’s boat which ran aground in Fiumara last night, Saturday 4 May, is very complex. Two units of the Fiumicino Coast Guard went to their aid, the CP 831 and the A10 boat. The request for help had arrived via radio to the operations room of the Port Authority around 7 pm.

The boat was proceeding on shallow water, with the auxiliary engine, when it ended up on the rocks.

The grandfather and granddaughter suffered no consequences while freeing the boat did not prove to be very simple. Once recovered, she was taken to mooring at the Canados shipyard.

In the last month, three boats have run aground in the same spot, despite the fact that the Port Authority has widely disseminated nautical information which indicates the danger of the Fiumara canal due to the sandbank which significantly reduces the depth of the canal.

The Lazio Region has authorized an emergency safety intervention for the consortium of shipbuilding operators and landing points along the canal.

Once this intervention has been carried out, the danger of navigation should also be reduced.
