dressing change, initiative on May 3rd in L’Aquila – Radio L’Aquila 1

THE EAGLE – ‘Forward People! The People’s School of L’Aquila‘ dedicates 1 May 2024 to women’s work and does so by celebrating Rosa Genoni in an initiative that will be held on 3 May 2024 at the CGIL auditorium in Via Saragat, at 5.00 pm.

The initiative, entitled “Rosa Genoni: Dressing change. Fashion. Struggle and Revolution”, will be curated by the professor of artistic disciplines Alessandra Carducci and will be an opportunity to talk about women’s work.

In fact, although Rosa Genoni (1867-1954) was the godmother of Italian fashion and much more than that, the combination of prejudices on the superficiality of fashion and the political commitment of women make her an almost unknown character, denying her the space she deserves in the Italian cultural, political and trade union panorama.

Rosa Genoni, in fact, was a versatile figure: seamstress, scholar, teacher, political activist, trade unionist, journalist and feminist who La Scuola del Popolo dell’Aquila proposes as a worker from the past who speaks to the present.

Women’s work, far from having achieved equality in terms of responsibilities, roles, wages, recognition and opportunities, is a nebulous issue and is necessarily intertwined with the difficulty of reconciling professional life and family life within of a still profoundly patriarchal society that demeans the talents and abilities of women.

Italy has the lowest female employment rate of European countries and one in five women gives up working after the birth of their first child, when she does not lose her job during pregnancy.

These are very partial and worrying data and ask us about the degree of civilization and progress of our country, where the rights achieved by women are constantly under attack and must be protected in order to continue to exist and improve the long path of liberation from male models.

All this will be discussed in CGIL on 3 May 2024 through one of the issues most easily subject to prejudice and discrimination: beauty that Rosa Genoni, in an exemplary manner, has been able to reconcile with struggle, politics and feminism.
