“For a more aware Europe”: a successful event for the 3 centers Europe Direct Sicilians (Catania, Palermo And Trapani) who simultaneously put students from schools in different provinces in communication with MEPs, so that they could ask them questions on major European issues.
The initiative, perfectly successful, took place Wednesday 24 April 2024 in 3 schools: the ITI “G. Ferraris” of San Giovanni La Punta (Catania), the IS “Einaudi Pareto” of Palermo and the ITT “GB Friend” of Trapani; IPSIA was added to these in connection Monteleone of Trapani and the high school “V. Linares” of Licata (Agrigento).
During the event, moderated by the journalist from JO Group Alberto Molino, the young “first voters” dialogued with the institutions and MEPs called to participate: Pietro Bartolo, Annalisa Tardino, Raffaele Stancanelli And Caterina Chinnici. Also present Alfredo Alagna Consultant of the European Parliament and the two officials Carlo CorazzaDirector of the European Parliament Office in Italy, e Luca PierantoniHead of the Political Affairs Team Representation in Italy European Commission.
The three Sicilian Europe Directs, for which they were present Giovanni Carbonaro (EDCT), Domenico Caeti (EDPA) e Marta Ferrantelli (EDTP), before the event they had prepared and sent educational material to the schools, thanks to which the students were able to delve deeper into some European issues (such as crisis management, the Green Deal, industrial competitiveness, etc.), the subject of the questions to MEPs.
At the conclusion of the debate with the European institutions, which was also attended by some teachers and the former principal of the Marconi – Mangano higher education institute in Catania Egidio Paganoas a member of the Steering Committee of Europe Direct Cataniathe students also had the opportunity to learn about the opportunities offered today by the European Union and to get in touch with the association Erasmus Student Network (ESN) Cataniafor which he reported Gaia Trapani.
For 2024 and before the next ones European elections of June, it was probably the largest Europe Direct event organized in Sicily, made possible thanks to the synergistic effort made by the 3 centers of European Commission. It was also a nice opportunity active citizenship and an example of participatory democracy.
