Scoglitti Necropolis: eight new tombs found. A burial violated by grave robbers

Tombs violated in Scoglitti. The grave robbers went into action a few days ago in the area north of the cemetery of the seaside village in an area where burials were found a few weeks ago which can be traced back to one of the necropolises used by the inhabitants of the ancient Greek colony of Camarina. The necropolis was located beyond the Ippari river. The other two necropolises (Passo Marinaro and Rifriscolaro) are instead located further east than what was the inhabited area of the ancient Greek city.

Found Capuchin tombs and Enchytrismos amphorae

The discovery of the eight burials occurred during preventive archaeological excavations linked to the construction activity. The excavations were conducted by the head of the archaeological section of the Superintendency of Ragusa Saverio Scerra and the archaeologist Nicolò Bruno, with the help of some students. “Eight burials were found – explained Scerra – we found some Capuchin tombs, but also some Enchytrismos, amphorae that were used for the burial of children and, in some cases, the ashes of adults. The amphorae were then locked up and placed in the tombs. The burials date back to the second half of the fifth century BC and, partly, to the fourth century. These are very interesting finds. Unfortunately, one of these tombs, the last one still to be explored, was violated by grave robbers.” The incident was reported to the Unit for the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage of the Carabinieri”.

The Superintendent of Ragusa, Antonino Di Marco, went to the site last Saturday. The excavation campaign has been concluded for the moment.
