Verona beat Salernitana 2-1 at Arechi in one of the postponements of the 37th day of the Serie A championship, three decisive points for the Venetians who can celebrate the arithmetic salvation with a day to spare. Suslov and Folorunsho bring the Scala team to 2-0 in the first half, in the second half Maggiore closes the gap for the Granata. But it’s not enough.
The choreography of the Granata fans for the farewell to Serie A was exciting, with a huge banner covering the entire curve representing the symbolic places of Salerno, dominated by the words “belonging”. Good start for Verona, driven by a greater dose of motivation. Very active as always, the Dutch Noslin, who attacks at speed starting from behind both from the right and from the left. In the quarter of an hour, double danger brought by Suslov, who first challenges Fiorillo with a free kick and then goes to collect a pass in the area but messes up the final dribbling. At 20′ Noslin wasted a wonderful opportunity: freed in front of Fiorillo by a pass from Folorunsho he shot wide with his left foot, his weak foot. In the 22nd minute, Verona takes the lead with a solo from Suslov, who steals the ball in the midfield, exchanges with Noslin and just outside the area unloads a left-footed shot that hits the far post. Hellas confirms itself as a specialist in goals from outside: tenth in the league, only Atalanta has scored more with eleven. In the 3rd minute of injury time, Verona doubled their lead and also put the second hand on Serie A: good work by Serdar in the midfield completed by the ball stolen by Tchatchoua, who fed Noslin on the right, who slotted it in for Lazovic in an overlap, the ball in the middle for Folorunsho who has no difficulty beating Fiorillo flatly. Boos rained down for the home players as they returned to the locker rooms, “shame” was the most shouted word from the stands: like blaming the Granata fans, the team took to the pitch with a limp and listless attitude.
In the second half Colantuono switches to a back four inserting Candreva for Pirola. Verona close to 3-0 with Noslin entering the area from the right and touching the far post. Again the Dutchman squanders a great opportunity with a header by smashing Fiorillo in Lazovic’s cross. Problems for Cabal, who in the 23rd minute gives way to Magnani by changing the defensive structure to three. Salernitana is more lively, but only tries with a couple of shots from outside. Teams that in fact settle on the result from the half hour mark, when the round of changes begins. Of note is the debut in Serie A in Salernitana of Gerardo Fusco, son of Luca, record holder of appearances in the granata jersey in all championships. Salernitana thanks the constant encouragement of the fans by scoring the 2-1 with Maggiore in the 90th minute, who collects a ball rejected by the post following a shot by Pierozzi. After 4′ of injury time (very long for Hellas) it ends with the yellow-blue joy for a miraculous salvation.
