Verona Rugby, Lazio wins the playoff semi-final first leg

New call-to-action

I walk uphill to Verona. The charcoal guys have fielded an opaque test from the point of view of precision and disciplineallowing Lazio to play their best rugby, made up of strong play and suffocating pressure.

The match

Lazio immediately put their quality in foot play to good use. The first try comes before the fifth minute, with an excellent kick that was caught in the goal area by winger Santarelli. The first points of the double playoff challenge belong to Lazio.

Verona feels the pinch and struggles to get into the game, and the Lazio takes advantage of it. A beautiful multi-phase action by the Biancocelesti, originating from yet another Veronese setting error, breaks through the anthracite line and takes the guests to 14-0. In just a few minutes, Verona had to suffer three blows: the goal of the second line Cicchinelli, the injury to captain Zago which forced him out, and a yellow card given to Dario Chistolini which also undermined the superiority that Verona had shown in orderly mix.

Too many handling errors by Verona in the first half he practically never manages to establish himself in the Lazio 22. Between poor choices, measurement errors and imprecise ball control, Lazio seemed to mentally dominate the match.

The end of the first half and the second are a challenge of nerves. The anthracites’ indiscipline makes the difference and Lazio scores three more kicks to fix the result at 23-0, with Verona who is unable to set due to too much imprecision at all stages of the field.

A yellow waved at Giovannini could rekindle Verona’s hopes but once again inaccuracies and indiscipline make the difference. The first points arrive with a very long kick from Ormson which removes the zero from the scoreboard, but they fail to shake the team.

Only in the last ten minutes Verona manages to find its intensity again, and with a surge of pride he pushes continuously into the Lazio red zone. The anthracites flirt with the goal on several occasions, a maul falls centimeters from the goal, a few too many forwards stop promising actions on the wings. In the end it is a kick from Ormson that finds Sardo’s hands on the left flag and gives a smile and hope to a Payanini Center packed with fans.

A one-sided semi-final in which Verona certainly didn’t give the performance they wanted. To give the anthracites hope, however, there is a score that doesn’t totally condemn, there are four points scored by Lazio, and an appeal test – next Sunday – which just can’t be missed.
