Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum wins presidential elections

Claudia Sheinbaum elected first female President of Mexico. The candidate of Morena, the party of outgoing president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, prevailed over the opposition candidate, Xóchitl Gálvez in the presidential elections which took place yesterday. “For the first time in the 200 years of the Republic, Mexico will have a woman president and it will be transformational. Thanks to all Mexicans. Today we have demonstrated with our vote that we are a democratic people.” Sheinbaum said on ‘X’ after confirming his election to lead the country. ‘This is the triumph of the people of Mexico, of the peaceful revolution of consciences and the recognition of our peoplewho have a clear obligation to continue and advance with the ‘Cuarta Transformación de la Vida Pública de México’“, he added.

”I want to thank the Mexican people for recognizing our history, achievements, conviction and will, but above all for recognizing our national project. I am also grateful because, for the first time in 200 years of republic, I will become the first female president of Mexico,” he has declared. They want a plural, diverse and democratic Mexicoor. Our duty is and will always be to take care of every Mexican, without distinction,” Sheinbaum said. “Even if many Mexicans do not fully agree with our project, we will have to walk in peace and harmony to continue building a just and more prosperous Mexico,” he added.

Sheinbaum, 61, has pledged to continue the policy laid out over the past six years by her mentor, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, elected in 2018. “We will dedicate public funds to carry out the president’s social programs”Sheinbaum underlined when announcing that there will be a “friendly relationship” with Washington and that “We will always defend Mexicans” in the United States.

The partial count published by the National Electoral Institute (INE) attributes 60% of the preferences to Sheinbaum, compared to 28% for Gálvez. The third candidate, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, obtained 8.7%. INE president Guadalupe Taddei called on politicians, candidates and parties to “maintain serenity and ensure compliance with the procedures”, as well as to accept the results “with maturity”. Taddei spoke about “a historic day”.
