ROSARNO The network of Paduan associations and collectives that organize the “May Day against wars“, the Free and Thinking Committee of Taranto, the Casa del Popolo in Rosarno named after Peppe Valariotimunicipal councilor of the PCI killed by the ‘Ndrangheta on June 11, 1980, and the Ugly Film company, which he is working on a documentary film about his story, launch an appeal against the war on rights and against the arms industry, so that it can be a common May Day in the name of peace, social and climate justice. In a note, the groups write: «The international and national scenario in which this May 1st takes place is characterized more than in the years just past the wars. Wars understood both as armed conflicts – in Ukraine and Gaza, without forgetting the 50 wars currently underway on the planet – and as attacks on the environment, on rights, on people’s movements, on living and working conditions, on access to water, to what remains of social welfare in Europe, to the right to health and universal access to care.”
We must respond to this war on human and social rights by “uniting the disputes – they argue – from South to North Italy, fighting together, for the same defense of the environment, of the land and of the welfare state, and, obviously, of peace . A bridge in the name of rights – naturally against that of Strait of Messina – which in fact already exists and unites the struggles of the citizens of Padua, Taranto and Rosarno». «In Calabria, as well as in Puglia, Taranto and Nardò, and in the centers of the North-East, over the years – they add – thousands of citizens have mobilized to form a common front, without distinction between Italians and migrant workers. Because the war on global rights does not know ethnicity, origin or skin color.” For this reason, the network of committees and associations aims to «start building the bridge of rights, peace and the environment, feeling all of us united, simultaneously from the First of May against the wars in Padua, to the One of May Free and Pensante di Taranto, until May 1st in Gioia Tauro plain».
