The Municipality of Narni acquires the Gole del Nera

Municipality of Narni and the Italian Railway Network have signed the deed of acquisition of the areas of the Gole del Nera by the municipal administration. The signature, the Municipality announced in a note, constitutes the final act of a 30-year long affair and follows a preliminary acquisition agreement already signed in 2019. With this formalization the Municipality comes into definitive possession of the stretch that goes from Nera Montoro to Narni where the cycle/pedestrian path known as the Gole del Nera has already existed for years.

This act, again according to the Municipality, will allow further redevelopment interventions in the village of Stifone with the creation of the Gole del Nera Visitor Center and with a path to enhance quality tourism combined with the recovery of the numerous naturalistic and technological emergencies. In the 1990s, the disused section of the Orte-Ancona railway, between the Nera Montoro station and the Ponte di Augusto area, was used as a parking lot for decommissioned freight wagons.

Subsequently the wagons were removed as well as the section of railway with the elimination of tracks and ballasts. In the early 2000s, projects began to be developed for the reuse of the route and in 2010 the administration approved the first act relating to the construction of the Gole cycle/pedestrian path, which was then built thanks to two separate grants from the Umbria Region, with the consent of RFI, and with five distinct redevelopment interventions of as many significant places for the creation of the route in an area already recognized as a Site of Community Interest.
