The general secretary of the Ust CISL Ragusa Siracusa, Vera Carasi, intervenes on the topic of health and safety at work which was discussed at the last national assembly of CISL delegates also with respect to the problems occurring in the Iblea area.

It is necessary– declares Carasi- iidentify the tools that allow institutions and civil society to join together in a common battle. Because we must put an end to this situation which is not worthy and which offends the values of our Constitution. After an episode or worse yet a tragedy occurs at work – underlines the secretary – there is always unanimous condolence, widespread indignation which, however, does not prevent everything from falling back into a general condition of indifference after a few days, everything, in short, goes back to how it was before. We cannot accept it. We cannot accept that the scandal of deaths at work does not remain established as the absolute priority it should be.

As regards the data from the province of Ragusa, the general secretary of the Ust CISL Ragusa Siracusa explains that “In 2023, in the province of Ragusa, fatal accidents at work (Inail data) grew by 50% (from 2 to 3 units). This is why we say that protests born on an emotional wave and destined to remain there are no longer enough. You cannot hope to clear your conscience simply with one more strike. The demagogic tones with which others would like to give us trade union lessons are indecent and dangerous. Because they set the social temperature on fire, heat up and break relationships between people in the workplace. They pit workers against workers. It does not work this way.

Let’s not forget that, as our secretary Luigi Sbarra reiterated in Rome – continues Carasi – every time a worker dies, or gets injured, or becomes ill due to professional causes, the defeat affects the whole country. We are here to say that the trail of blood that continuously crosses workplaces that cannot be transformed into battlefields must be stopped. We are here to ask, to demand, that we move from momentary indignation to full awareness, to the will to give concrete answers.” Which? “

It is necessary to strengthen the staff of inspectors – concludes the general secretary of the Ust CISL Ragusa Siracusa – which will allow us to increase checks, controls and inspections. It is essential to introduce a “credit licence” aimed at qualifying companies. We need to open the path that will bring the subject of health and safety into the programs of schools of all levels. It is a recognition of our proposals and our mobilization. It is necessary to extend the credit license to all sectors, to develop rigorous criteria on rewards and sanctions together with the union, to attribute new powers of supervision and decision to the delegates for safety in companies and in the territories, extending those participatory levers at the basis of our bill which, after the extraordinary campaign to collect signatures which also involved the province of Ragusa, is now being examined by Parliament”.
