Ravenna, fight against mosquitoes: two ordinances issued in force from May 1st. Azimut treatments are also underway
Descriptive text here

From 1 May to 31 October two ordinances will be in force for the prevention and control of diseases transmitted by insect vectors and, in particular, by the tiger mosquito (aedes albopictus) and the common mosquito (culex spp), aimed at citizens and businesses and the owners of periodically flooded areas (basins for water storage, excavations for extraction purposes, crops that involve submersion, etc.).

The objective is to eliminate any possible micro-outbreak but it is necessary for everyone to comply with the provisions, reiterating the importance of citizens implementing prevention and treatment measures in the areas of their competence, failure to comply with which entails an administrative fine that can range from 103 to 516 euros. Furthermore, random checks are foreseen. For this reason it is useful to keep a calendar with the dates of the treatments performed. In fact, any intervention in the public sphere may not be exhaustive if one considers the vastness of private areas. Stagnation of water that cannot be eliminated must be treated continuously, through the use of anti-larval products distributed free of charge in decentralized municipal offices and on sale in pharmacies and agricultural consortia.

In summary, among other things, you must:

avoid the permanent or temporary abandonment in public and private open spaces of containers of any nature and size in which rainwater can collect and avoid any collection of stagnant water;
proceed to empty any water accumulated in containers so as to avoid stagnation following rain;
treat the water present in manholes, drain grates, rainwater collection wells, and any other non-disposable container (including fountains and swimming pools not in operation) using products with guaranteed larvicidal efficacy;
keep courtyards and open areas free of weeds, brush, and waste of all kinds, and arrange them in such a way as to avoid the stagnation of rainwater or any other source;
empty fountains and swimming pools that are not in use or carry out adequate larvicidal treatments;
prevent water pools from forming in excavation areas, bins, tires, and other containers;
inside cemeteries, if water treated with larvicidal products is not available, flower vases must be filled with damp sand; alternatively the water in the vase must be treated with a larvicidal product at each change. If fake flowers are used, the vase must still be filled with sand if placed outdoors;
the operators of greenhouses, nurseries, plant and flower trade businesses and similar activities must implement a correctly planned anti-larval fight in order to counteract the proliferation of native mosquitoes and the introduction of mosquitoes of exotic species;
with regard to automatic garden sprayers of products against mosquitoes (adulticides and insect repellents), which are increasingly widespread, citizens are expected to communicate to the Municipality and the Local Health Authority of the location and technical characteristics of the system and the exclusive use of products regularly authorized for outdoor areas and non-professional use.

The execution of adultsicidal treatments in private spaces must also be communicated in advance, at least 5 days before the treatment, by sending the form “Communication of adultsicidal treatment against mosquitoes and other insects of public interest”:

  • to the Municipality of Ravenna at the address: Environment and Territory Protection Service, viale Berlinguer 30 or by fax at n.0544-546138 or by PEC at the address:[email protected];
  • to the Hygiene and Public Health Service of the Public Health Department of the AUSL of Romagna at the address via Fiume Montone Abbandonato n. 134, or by fax to n.0544 286800 or by PEC to the address: [email protected];
    Meanwhile, anti-mosquito treatments have been underway by Azimut throughout the municipality since Monday 15 April and will continue at regular intervals until September.
