May 1st, Labor Day in Corigliano d’Otranto and Lecce

Bandadriatica at the Art&Lab Lu Mbroia in Corigliano d’Otranto
On Wednesday 1 May (membership fee 3 euros) the appointment with “Culture is work” returns at the Art&Lab Lu Mbroia in Corigliano d’Otranto: a day of reflections, banquets and lots of music to celebrate “The day of workers ”. At 12 in the refreshment area there will be the possibility to have an aperitif, buy sandwiches, focaccias, salads and vegetables, first and second courses, desserts and fruit. From 3.30pm the BandAdriatica and other guests will be on stage. Carried by the swirling winds that illuminate the coasts of the eastern sea, the ensemble led by Claudio Prima rows on the agitated waves of Salento music with elements from all the Mediterranean sound coasts like a complex “Babylon”, where languages begin to harmonize on popular melodies in the mixed fervor of the port cities. Thus the Apulian traditions take on a new resonance and carry the frenetic echoes of the music of Salento far away through sounds of celebrations, from town to town, which arrive after fifteen years of research on the common musical matrices of the shores of the Adriatic Sea, comparing themselves with the music of Albania, Macedonia, Croatia, with the Serbian brass bands and North Africa and reaching the easternmost Mediterranean. BandAdriatica has collaborated with artists such as Bombino, Mercan Dede, Rony Barrak, Savina Yannatou, Chieftains, Burhan Ochal, Kocani Orkestar, Boban Markovic Orchestra, Fanfara Tirana, Eva Quartet, Cafer Naziblas, Fanfare Ciocarlia and Michel Godard. Guided tours of the Rudiae archaeological park in Lecce
On the occasion of Labor Day on May 1st, the Rudiae Archaeological Park in Lecce offers a double round of guided tours at 11am and 5pm. The public will be accompanied to discover the city, first Messapian (7th century BC) and then Roman ( 3rd century BC), known above all for being the birthplace of the father of Latin literature Quintus Ennius (239-169 BC). The weekend appointment has also been confirmed, every Saturday at 5pm and Sunday at 11am. The archaeological excavations, which began in the second half of the nineteenth century thanks to Duke Sigismondo Castromediano under the direction of Luigi De Simone, have brought to light areas of necropolis, underground tombs dug into the rock, portions of the Messapian fortifications, as well as sections of paved roads, places of worship and public buildings from the Roman era. At the center of the settlement is the Roman Amphitheatre, built during the reign of Emperor Trajan (98-117 AD) and recently brought to light. In fact, Lecce can boast two Roman amphitheaters just a few kilometers away: that of Lupiae in Piazza Sant’Oronzo, in the heart of the city, and that of ancient Rudiae, in the countryside on the outskirts of the Salento capital on the road to San Pietro in Lama . During the visits, the figure of Otacilia Secundilla will also be remembered, a young Roman woman who lived two thousand years ago who, with her philanthropic work, donated her savings for the construction of the Amphitheatre. Rudiae is one of the most important archaeological sites in Salento, today accessible thanks to the public-private partnership for the promotion and valorisation stipulated between the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Brindisi and Lecce and ARVa srl - spin off of the University of Salento, also on the basis of a prior agreement between the Superintendence itself and the Municipality of Lecce. Entrance 8/6 euros. Info and reservations Parcoarcheologicorudiae.it.
