CATANIA – “I hope with all my heart that whoever has Sarah’s future in their hands will act with conscience and common sense, so that this girl’s dreams are not destroyed but encouraged”. It is the appeal of Catanese singer Giovannella Urso, who writes to Live Sicilia asking to let everyone know what this girl is experiencing.
Sarah, of whom Giovannella gives us some shots, is the young girl from Catania of Tunisian origins kidnapped by her father at 7 years old. That man dragged her with him to Tunisia and she escaped from there, on a sea boat, to return to her mother and her brothers.
The expulsion
Except that here, months ago, once she arrived in Pantelleria, she had to deal with the bureaucracy of the Italian State and specifically with a expulsion decree issued by the Police Commissioner of Trapani. A choice contested by Sarah through her lawyer, Giuseppe Lipera. The case is currently suspended.
Now civil society is also starting to move. “It is unacceptable to divide a daughter from her mother – writes Giovannella -. From the first moment you give birth to a child the bond for both is symbioticI’m a mother and I know what I’m talking about.”
“If then after raising a daughter for seven years, you see her torn from your arms and brought to Tunisia by his father only out of revenge against his mother after a separation, things become dramatic for both.”
Sarah’s mother
Giovannella remembers how Sarah’s mother never abandoned her and how she always did everything to bring her back to Catania, unfortunately in vain. “She took steps to send money and also went to visit her many times in recent years in Tunisia – she continues – to maintain that bond of love that exists between mother and daughter”.
So Sarah, having reached the age of majority, decided to cross the sea and return home, without her mother knowing. “In that house where she had left her childhood memories that they have never abandoned her in these years, far from her mother and brothers, and he manages to get there – he continues -. But what if she had gone differently?
The singer’s questions are dramatic: “What if Sarah had drowned and failed to disembark? She would have been praised from everyone! Since she is alive and has not drowned, neither the people nor the political institutions intervene.”
The tragedy of a few years ago
“I remember very well that Enzo Bianco gave funerals to the Africans who died at sea at the time and proclaimed a citizen’s mourning – he concludes -. Since Sarah is alive, however, everything passes in total indifference and no one cares. Nobody is interested in the goals she wants to achieve, continue her studies, go to university and graduate, and stay with her mother and siblings where she was born”.
