the Flc Cgil caravan is in Palermo

The Flc Cgil rights caravan, which is touring Italy, will make a stop Tuesday 30 April in Palermo to inform and raise citizens’ awareness of the Calderoli bill on differentiated autonomy, which the CGIL opposed from the first moment, both in terms of substance and method. From 9.30 am to 1.30 pm the camper will park in Piazza Indipendenza, in front of the Presidency of the Region. In the afternoon, from 4pm to 6.30pm, it will move to the Teatro Massimo (Rouge et Noir cinema side).

Also on April 30, in front of the Presidency offices, the Flc Cgil Palermo convened the general assembly, extended to include the participation of UDU students and young people from the middle school student network. On May 1st the caravan of rights will be in Portella della Ginestra and from 6pm to 9pm Zisa cultural construction sites. On May 2nd, the last stop in Palermo, from 12pm to 6pm in the square of Mondello.

“We invite the citizens, the students, the Sicilian deputies to participate in the presidium of the Flc Cgil under the presidency of the Region, because initially President Schifani immediately declared himself in favor of this bill, even if now he too seems to be slowing down,” he declares the secretary Flc Cgil Palermo Fabio Cirino.

“A bill that is harmful for us: if implemented, it would accentuate the gaps that already exist in our country”, continues the trade union representative: “Our motto is that knowledge is not broken, the constitutional school must remain one, unique and united. Already in Sicily we know an example of differentiated autonomy, that of the professional training sector, and we certainly cannot be proud of it, where training institutions apply different employment contracts, with different wages and rights. Indeed, situations of disparity can occur within the same training institution. This is why it is important to oppose this bill also with a possible referendum.”

In the camper stage on April 30th at Teatro Massimo, support teachers from some associations will also be present to protest against the latest government measures. Rules regarding the school, which should on the one hand allow the confirmation of temporary support teachers, at the request of parents, in defiance of the rankings, and on the other give the possibility of asserting support qualifications not yet recognized by the ministry in the provincial rankings supporting.

“With differentiated autonomy – continues Cirino – the individual Regions could retain the resources deriving from taxes on their territory, spending them on local schools. This would entail differences in wages, rights and even different programs. It is shocking that, in a globalized and interconnected world, the answer could be that of a condominium logic.”

Cirino concludes: “They already exist enough disparity between North and South, on school buildings, on transport within the Region, on full time at school and we are also deprived of extracurricular teaching opportunities. So the list of differences would only get longer.”
