“Criminal facts and reality”, with a post on Facebook entitled this way, the mayor of Vittoria Francesco Aiello broke his silence this morning on the serious news events that occurred on April 25th.
“After the ambush which dramatically confirmed the dormant persistence of mafia cells ready to strike, the audience of choristers performed the ritual utterances of condemnation. Yes, of course, we condemn. But the sentence, once served, is not enough” declares Aiello, referring to the many interventions that have taken place in recent hours following the wounding of a former justice collaborator.
“It is necessary that the Vittoria society and all the institutions, of the State of the Municipality of the Region, the civil society, question themselves on the conditions that determine the survival of a mafia system, similar to the one that exists throughout Sicily, and how it can be nourished within the economic and social reality of our territory.
If the mafia and stidda survive in sleep, before our eyes there are instead the signs of degeneration, which we must try to describe, control, note, report, counteract. Together with the police forces, strenuously committed to defending our communities from criminal assault.
It is on this ridge that the mutation occurs. When illegality becomes a system and the mafias start a business and consolidate themselves sensationally. In this area the system demonstrates its fragility.
In the transformed area, from Licata to Pachino to Vittoria, agricultural products are sold with practices that are not always correct. Aggi, commissions, off-market prices, double invoicing, away commissions: no one talks about it. Absolute silence. The business is too big. Better to indulge.
Then there is drugs, the formation of mixed, inter-ethnic criminal organisations, which introduce new criminal methodologies and rites into the territory, with an increasingly large and socially varied audience of consumers. Finally there are the stories of the past, the revenges, the scores to be settled.
But the investigators will clarify these aspects” adds the mayor who concludes by saying: “Unfortunately reality is shrouded in screens of public and private political and social hypocrisies. While the men of the police force work and expose themselves in the territories.
