he rode around the center blasting music from his bicycle

Every day he went out on the streets of Treviso with its “Radiobici”, blasting music across the city. But for a few days the neighbor hadn’t seen him around anymore, above all he didn’t feel it, and raised the alarm. Thus, on 19 April, the death of Daniele Abalsamo, known to everyone as “Radiolina” or even “Danny Fly”, who died in total solitude in the council house, was discovered of Borgo Mestre where he lived.

Hate and love

Loved and “hated” at the same time, “Radiolina” was originally from Senise, in the province of Cosenza, where his mother and a sister still live, but he had arrived in Treviso some time ago and he immediately became a character. The man had transformed his bike into a sort of walking jukebox, mounting two speakers and a six thousand watt stereo system on it. Vehicle on which the over 50s were riding at any time of the day or night, filling up the air of De Andrè’s ballads and 80s music, his favorites. He was a solitary and brilliant guy, he was also an electronic designer, an engineer, a builder of ultralights, a lover of motorbikes and even a sound engineer for a period, then it all ended due to a bad accident that had him in some way brought to the Marche where he realized he could stop.

The relationship with the city

A complicated relationship his with citizenship, between those who applauded him as he passed and sang the songs with him, and those who, annoyed, denounced him. He has collected numerous fines for disturbing the peace and has often had to deal with groups of residents and young people who they even bullied him or stole from him the bike. A few years ago the police also had to intervene because some kids had thrown his “radiobic” into the Sile. He had often been defended, even free of charge, by the lawyer Catia Salvalaggio who had taken charge of it, receiving pasta, chilli pepper and aubergines in oil from her native Calabria in exchange.

The fatal illness

Abalsamo lived completely alone and is was probably the victim of a fatal illness: in fact, he had recently fallen ill near Ponte San Martino, right in the centre. Rescued by the police and Suem had refused hospitalization, because he didn’t know how to live without a bike. “I don’t want masters, I want to be free” he liked to repeat to those who asked him why he didn’t find a job or live in certain conditions. Now he will blast music from up there too. The date of the funeral has not yet been decided because we are waiting for someone to take care of the expenses.
