Sunday 28 April, at 4.30 pm, in the historic Palazzo Giandalia in Castronovo di Sicilia, Corso Umberto n. 114, meeting with the writer Sara Favarò and her books “Teste di Moro e il Basilico”, Di Girolamo Editore, and “Madri si nasce”, Euno Book. After the institutional greetings of the Mayor, accountant Vitale Gattuso and the Councilor for Cultural Heritage, Dr. Andrea Piazza, will speak: prof. Niny De Nicola Piazza who will report on the book “Moor’s Heads and Basil”, prof. Nino Di Chiara who will present “Madri si nasce”, and the author, Knight of Merit of the Republic, Sara Favarò. The history of “Dark brown heads and basil” that Sara Favarò tells is rich in symbolism. The author examines the female condition in a social and cultural context in which women were not allowed to live their love openly. In addition to telling stories she created and popular legends, the writer explores the symbolism of “moor heads” and basil, creating a link between popular culture and cultured literature, between East and West. The ancient Asian story of Vindra, who sacrifices herself for the love of her husband, tells of how the woman is transformed into basil. In the narrative there is a strong connection between love, death and rebirth, where basil symbolizes life that continues to flourish even after death.
The book “Mothers are born” takes the reader on a journey through the traditions of the Christmas celebration in a small Sicilian town: Vicari. The scholar investigates habits and customs, offering an authentic and rooted vision of local culture, of the rites connected to the holiday and its symbols. The book contains stories, recipes, culinary uses, orations, popular songs, photos of places and people, and even an ancient popular Christmas farce that had been forgotten. The story that gives the book its title offers a glimpse of human emotions and desires that go beyond the “conscious” life choices of women who, at least for one night, can give voice to their instinct of forbidden motherhood.

Sara Favarò she is a writer sensitive to social, gender and environmental issues. In her 85 books of fiction, non-fiction, children’s literature and poetry, she addresses important issues and documents Sicilian popular culture. His passion for writing is also reflected in his illustrated books and short stories. She is a singer-songwriter, she is co-founder of the Etno-Rock Group Sikelia, born from the Association A Cori Tuttu U Munnu in 1980. He wrote the lyrics to the group’s original songs, performing around the world. His music ranges from popular to rock. She is an actress and theater director and has played the main roles in the best comedies of the Sicilian repertoire. Furthermore, she is an author, actress and storyteller in the theatrical shows she wrote and directed with her theater company, Gruppo Arte SIKELIA. You have also acted for film and television. Sara Favarò is a freelance journalist and collaborates with national and foreign newspapers. In 2021 she was appointed Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, a prestigious recognition awarded by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, furthermore she has received numerous awards for her commitment in the field of art, culture and journalism.
