A Pitbull was beaten by a group of very young people who first strangled him with a steel noose around his neck and finally buried him alive. Luckily the animal was saved by a woman who, after realizing what was happening, called for help. It happened to Bagheriain the province of Palermo, and what is shocking is not only the violence of the episode, but that it was committed by very young boys.

The association Paws that lend a hand Odv presented a complaint to the Prosecutor’s Office of Termini Imerese with the request for conviction of the accused and the determination to become a civil party in the underlying proceedings, two of the perpetrators have in fact already been identified.

The animal rights lawyer intervened on the matter, heard by Kodami Giada Bernardi: «It is yet another animal victim of human bestiality and cruelty. The Pitbull from Bagheria became the target of a pack of boys who first beat him, also causing significant damage to one eye, and then put a wire around his neck. They would have completed their criminal plan by burying him alive in the grave that one of them was starting to dig if a passerby had not prevented the poor dog’s death.”

Bernardi underlined the most disturbing aspect of the whole affair: the authors of the gesture are little more than teenagers: «Rebel without a cause which is the mirror of a bad and sick society, which prefers to vent its frustrations on the weakest rather than rolling up its hands to resolve them. Violence has now become the order of the day from North and South. This escalation is the result of ignorance, of the lack of any respect for life, of the total absence of values on which to build a personal path.”

There are many cases in the news that see teenagers involved in the mistreatment and killing of animals: «A frightening phenomenon that must absolutely not be underestimated. There gratuitous and unmotivated violence which must immediately be put to rest, both by the institutions, including through the application of severe measures, and above all it must be prevented within the family environment. Young people are the Italy of tomorrow, but if these are the conditions I highly doubt that this country, especially with regards to the protection of animals, will ever be truly civilized.”

«It’s been many years since I fight for the protection of those who have no voice and I will continue to do so – underlines the animal rights lawyer – I believe that bringing to the tables of the Courts what has remained in the shadows for years, hidden by silence and disinterest, is the only way to achieve the necessary and much desired full protection of animals . From which today we are, unfortunately, light years away, but which I am sure we will arrive at, continuing along a path fraught with complaints, dismissals, oppositions, summons to trial, sentences of acquittal and conviction, from which we will tirelessly continue to extricate ourselves” .
