Abortion increasingly difficult in Sassari: objectors growing on the island
Descriptive text here

Even in Sassari and Nuoro there are too many obstacles for abortion

Despite opposition from the EU, the decree that opposes the application of theabortion it became law in Italy: a Sassari it’s already difficult. It includes a provision regarding the presence of anti-abortion associations in clinics offering services relating to voluntary termination of pregnancy, as established by law 194 of 1978.

The new law that will hinder access to the IVG has been approved.

Italy, which already has a high number of objecting doctors within medical facilities, intends to make access to the IVG more difficult when issuing certificates to patients. The new provision is introduced with an amendment by the Fratelli d’Italia deputy, Lorenzo Malagola. Approved both in the Budget Committee of the Chamber and subsequently in the Montecitorio chamber.

According to this amendment, the Regions have the right to involve third sector subjects with experience in maternity support in the organization of the counseling services provided for by law 194. This involvement can take place without leading to new or greater burdens on public finances . In essence, this legislation allows the Regions to make use of the ssupport of pro-life associations in offering services in clinics dedicated to voluntary termination of pregnancy. As long as this does not entail additional costs for the public purse.

The entry of pro-life associations are seen with concern from women’s associations, who already report difficulties in accessing the service. Resulting in a return to the dangerous clandestine abortionsmade with potentially dangerous drugs and instruments without medical support.

Even in Sardinia, having an abortion is increasingly difficult.

Sardinia is not a “green” region when it comes to a woman’s ability to terminate her pregnancy. There are objectors on the island 59.2% against the average of 63.4% in the rest of Italy, but the number of gynecologists who refuse to perform operations is increasingly higher and what is worrying is that on the island it is difficult to find an anesthetist who is not an objector since the number is the highest in Italy.

But abortion in Sardinia is problematic, because if the number of objectors in the rest of Italy it is decreasing it grows on the island. Compared to 2020, in the rest of Italy, the number of objecting doctors and anesthetists has decreased slightly, but in Sardinia it has gone from 3.6% among gynecologists and 0.6% among non-medical staff. The figure for anesthetists is growing by 9% in just one year.

In Sardinia women are also hindered in finding the least invasive method for abortion, since it is practiced only in 36.2% of cases, while the percentage in Italy rises to 49.2%. This means that with such a high number of objecting anesthesiologists, finding someone to perform surgery becomes quite difficult.

In the Province of Sassari abortion only occurs in a few hospitals.

More specifically, according to the data collected by the Luca Coscioni association in 2021, a Sassari you can do an IVG in the San Pietro clinics, where there are no conscientious objectors. At the Sassari Polyclinic, however, the IVG service is not available because the number of objecting gynecologists is 71% and the objecting anesthetists are 30%.

To Algherohospital recently deprived of the birthplacethe number of objecting gynecologists is 62%. The number of objecting anesthetists in 2021 was 50%. According to the data, out of 13 objecting gynecologists, only 5 of them are pro-choicewhile the anesthetists who perform the operations are 10 out of 20. Objecting non-medical personnel are of 24%.

AtOzieri hospitalInstead, there is no IVG servicesame situation in the other hospitals in the province of Sassari, except the hospital John Paul II of Olbiawhich has no objecting doctors, the only structure where this is possible perform an IVG without any obstaclesagain according to 2021 data. In northern Sardinia, there are therefore too many hospitals that hinder women from accessing IVG, but also from giving birth, unfortunately given the presence of too many birth centers closed (often where abortion is also hindered), forcing women to migrate for their reproductive rights.

This means that in Sardinia both the right to be a mother and not to be one insecurity it’s getting difficult. The island is also the region with the highest birth rate decrease in the country and a health system which, in general, worsens the quality of life of women.

In province of Nuoro the situation is worse because al Saint Francis in 2021 the number of objecting gynecologists was 82%, anesthetists 28% and non-medical staff was 18% in 2021. The only place where women had access to IVG in 2021 is atOur Lady of Merced Hospitaland (Lanusei). The situation is improving in southern Sardinia, where it is easier to find an abortion clinic.

The words of the president of the Todde Region.

Sardinia is one of the regions to have elected a centre-left council and this will not hinder the right to abortion of women living on the island. The new president said to Half past eightLilli Gruber’s La7 broadcast, that in Sardinia the right to abortion will not be trampled on.

In particular, President Todde said that “From our point of view, we will allow women to exercise their right as it should be done. In Sardinia we will not allow women’s bodies to be trampled on.”
