Appreciated artist in national and international scope, Sicilian of originbut resident for years in the capital, if he even exists considered one of the main exponents of a “new metaphysics” in the Italian painting of the second half of the twentieth centuryModica however presents its own very particular expressiveness, which involves Always the spectator in an aura unique and special.

Mediterranean Routes Circular Vision at the Andersen Museum

This is how the spaces of the Hendrik Christian Andersen House Museum directed by Maria Giuseppina Di Monte and pertaining to Directorate of State Museums of Rome, led by General Director of Museums Prof. Massimo Osannawelcomed a real event.

The project supported by the 2022-2023 CAP

It is in fact a prestigious project designed by Giuseppe Modica, with the very suggestive and programmatic title of “Mediterranean routes and circular vision ”. And it was precisely this project that, supported by CAP 2022-2023 – Plan for Contemporary Artpromoted by General Directorate of Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture allowed the acquisition of two works by Modica: “Melancholy” And “Mediterranean”(2017oil on panel) and “Refraction. Workshop” (2020oil painting on canvas).

Unpublished oils on canvas

And here we are at the route of the current exhibition: twenty oils on canvasalmost all unpublished and created by the artist in recent years, exhibited in the first floor room of the House Museum and it’s the same artist who Like this accompanies us in their vision: “ The Mediterranean it is not intended as a mythical Arcadiabut as a a place marked by many vicissitudes”.

The various shades of its exceptional blue

And it is precisely the visibility that Modica obtains of this “circular flow” with the use of various shades of its “exceptional blue”, who find their own harmonious immerse yourself in timethe light and memory, the latter “in its meanings of personal, cultural, anthropological memory”. And the choice of blueas the artist explains to us, depends on the awareness that it is precisely the “color of the atmosphere and distance” but also “of spirituality and contemplation”.

Mediterranean Routes Circular Vision to “feel” the breath of the Mediterranean

But next to the blue here the reds and ochers appear which enliven the atmosphere with “the vital energy of light” of which blue would appear as a “necessary counterpoint to light”. and as Modica suggests: “it is the color of breath, of freedom and of the vastness of the firmament.” You can feel itin these works, the “breath” of the Mediterraneanof that sea that our artist knows very well, having lived the first part of his life in that place overlooking the Mediterranean: the town of Mazara del Vallo: that “Mare Nostrum” today involved in the serious problems of migration.

Modica managed to do what Cezanne wanted

And so he writes Maria Giuseppina Di MonteDirector of House Museum: “Modica managed to do what Cézanne taught and desired or to create aimagebecause this is the task of painting, outside and above any linguistic and/or literary impairment.

Light, air, geometry, perspective

This principle of truth leads Modica to working with light and air: the first creates the color and the second envelops the shapes. Two more factors must be taken into account: geometry and perspectiveindispensable foundations of painting.”

Mediterranean Routes Circular vision and suspended images

As he writes Gabriele Simongini:” Modica even manages, in some of the most significant works on display in the exhibition, to magnificently condense in suspended imagesbut intense, the tragedy that transformed the Romans’ “Mare Nostrum” into “Mare Monstrum”.
