Sampdoria, against Como to find out who we are

Andrea Pirlo’s Sampdoria against Como is not just playing for a place in the playoff zone. Winning to prove that you are great…

The bad match in Spezia has been handed down to posterity, between spoiled fish (it fits, and it wouldn’t be the first time) and refereeing arrangements (the goal should have been annulled without any ifs or buts, on the penalty they were given more ridiculous ones and denied most sensational), having effectively archived the “salvation” practice, in my opinion the main objective of the season, the last four matches will tell us if this Sampdoria will be able to qualify among the top eight of this cadet round, and therefore try to compete for Serie A.

My personal opinion: given how the season has evolved, and if we wanted to put it on the values expressed, the play offs would be a bit of a gift. With all the mitigating factors involved, the team with the tenth largest audience in Italy (the seventh away) cannot lose eight times at home and offer such poor performances in terms of entertainment.

Then, I think it is indisputable that the full squad is worth much more. That the number of injuries has had an anomalous and abnormal impact is equally evident. It’s not just a quantitative discussion: the length of the absences and their contemporaneity are involved.

Again: that in any case the game has evolved over the months and has acquired a precise physiognomy game after game cannot be questioned. It seems silly, but even the type of errors (many and serious) seen in the league, especially in defense, are not the same as six/eight months ago. Not seeing it is football illiteracy or prejudice.

Sampdoria, our attack is not inferior to that of Como…

Having said this, Como arrives. And this has a precise meaning, because the Como team is very advanced, it will reach – I imagine – direct promotion, but…

But: first of all, in the first leg (when the current prophets were not yet on the bench) he had sucked, no more and no less than Doria, and he had won by one episode. Of those up there, frankly, it seemed the worst to me, together with Palermo. Of course, in the meantime everything has changed, so…

Furthermore: Sampdoria has scored very few points with those ahead of them in the standings. Four with Palermo, one – away – with Parma and Cremonese, one with Brescia. Considering that Palermo and Brescia are certainly not stronger than Doria (which, legitimately, could be the sixth strongest in the tournament today), let’s say that with the five best-equipped or best-disposed teams, not even a single victory has arrived so far. Other moments, for goodness sake, but that’s what the numbers say.

All this to say that I am curious to see this irresistible Como. Yet another home defeat, in my opinion, would say that this team is not ready, in any way; a convincing performance, on the contrary, could act as a springboard.

I don’t go too far into tactics. But I’ll throw out that a Pedrola – Esposito attack certainly doesn’t seem inferior to one that plays Cutrone – Gabrielloni. I would like the midfield to play as they were used to from the Modena match onwards (despite the injury breaks). And that the defense did its job, without distractions.
