Anpi and CGIL Rovigo: April 25th and its values

ROVIGO – The date of 25 April it is a symbol of free and liberated Italy, after twenty months of Resistance and a dramatic tribute of blood and pain. End of the German occupation. End of fascism. End of the conflict. The fascist state was overthrown, but also the old liberal state, and the construction of a new state and a new society began.

On 2 June 1946 the people chose the Republic and with the Constitution of 1948 democratic Italy was born, which is based on work and repudiates war.

Today it seems that the values of anti-fascism and the Resistance (which brought together communists, socialists, Christian Democrats, liberals, republicans, shareholders, etc.), which defeated the dictatorship in Italy and allowed all of us to live in freedom and peace, are put into discussion by those who represent the institutions of our democratic country, starting from the Government, with various distinctions or “counter narratives”.

These values must instead return to being unifying without ambiguity and for this reason too it is important to continue to carefully cultivate their memory, starting with the new generations.

The founding fathers did not even have the need to write the word anti-fascist because our Constitution marked the clear break with the fascist dictatorship and still affirms principles that were totally denied by fascism: democracy against dictatorship, equality against all discrimination and freedom against ‘oppression.

Questioning or just questioning all of this, starting from the founding values of our Constitution (also through reforms such as the premiership or differentiated autonomy which alter the balance of powers at the basis of our democracy and will increase inequalities between territories as well as between rich and poor) means culpably questioning democracy, freedom, equality, decent work and Peace on which our democratic republic founded on the Constitution and born from the Resistance is based.

Everything is even more in danger because there is war, which is often talked about irresponsibly, as if it were a harsh necessity or, worse, a new and acceptable normality.

It is therefore essential to all act together to reduce the many socio-economic inequalities that still exist. No one can be truly free and fully enjoy the important rights provided by our Constitution if they are subject to discrimination of any kind (gender, race, religion or other), if they live in poverty, if they do not have a job or are forced to live in precarious employment if they cannot enjoy the universal right to health and education.

This is why ANPI Provincial Committee of Rovigo and CGIL Provincial of Rovigo reiterate that this cannot be an April 25th like the others. Anti-fascists and democrats must all gather in the streets to forcefully reiterate that Italy is an anti-fascist and democratic Republic and that the citizens of this country have the right to have hope for a future made up of dignified and safe work, of equality , solidarity and stable and lasting peace.

Also for these reasons, Anpi, CGIL and many other Associations await you in Pontecchio Polesine on the afternoon of April 25th to celebrate Liberation Day together.
