On April 25th in Italy we celebrate the Liberation Day from the fascist regime and the German military occupation of the Nazi army, which took place in 1945.

The date of April 25th was chosen as a national holiday because that day the retreat of the soldiers of Nazi Germany and the fascists of the Republic of Salò from Turin and Milan began.

The following year, on 22 April 1946, the provisional Italian government led by Alcide de Gasperi established, with a decree, that 25 April would be a “national holiday”. Subsequently, law n.269 of May 1949 set the date definitively.

Various commemorations will take place in Sardinia. Here’s how and where.

Cagliari. Organized by the 25 April Committee and the Anpi, the event will start at 9.30 in Piazza Garibaldi, before moving to Via Sonnino for the institutional ceremony at the War Memorial in the Parco delle Rimembranze. It will end in Piazza del Carmine with speeches from the stage and music.

Nuoro. The Anpi will also place a wreath of flowers on the tomb of the Nuoro partisan Antonio Mereu and a flower under the signs of the seven streets bearing the names of the Sardinian partisans. The President of the Region, Alessandra Todde, will be present.

Oristano. Wreaths of flowers at the Resistance Park and at the Youth Center named after Flavio Busonera who was hanged in retaliation by the Nazi-fascists in 1944. The commemoration of the partisans will begin at 10 in the Resistance Park and continue at the Youth Center.

Sassari. The meeting will take place in Piazza Garibaldi, from where at 9.30 the procession will start towards Palazzo Ducale led by the “Luigi Canepa” band. Here the commemorative speeches will be given by the prefect Grazia La Fauci, by the president of the Sassari section of the Anpi, Thomas Arras and by the mayor Nanni Campus.
