COSENZA – The Group FS successfully concluded the first tests carried out in recent months and is now ready to use HVO biofuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), an advanced biodiesel obtained from renewable raw materials and which will be used on trains running on non-electrified lines and on buses. This was reported by Fs News. HVO biofuel reduces CO2 equivalent emissions by approximately 80% taking into account the entire life cycle of the fuelthanks also to the low concentrations of polyaromatics and the lack of polluting elements such as sulphur. FS has launched a tender to guarantee the necessary supply for its vehicles.

This is a negotiation process already underway and carried out through a procedure above the European threshold by invitation from the qualification system, aimed at the main operators in the sector. The trial with HVO begins in 2022 and, from July 2023, five Trenitalia trains regularly run on biofuel on the tracks of Calabria. Similar tests were conducted on Busitalia buses. Over the next few months the testing will also continue on the other types of diesel trains in the Trenitalia fleet.

“The FS Group is at the forefront in the use of biofuels – declares CEO Luigi Ferraris – the results of the experiments carried out on railway engines and buses have been very positive. We are working to procure biofuels so as to expand their use on the five thousand kilometers of railway line that is not yet electrified. It is a tested and consolidated technology that will allow us to reduce emissions, contributing to the decarbonisation of the transport sector even in the short to medium term”.
