A local public transport system suitable for disabled users. The new on-demand public transport service was presented yesterday morning, in the headquarters of the regional Citadel, by theregional transport councilor Emma Stainefrom the regional manager of the Transport sector Giuseppe Pavone and fromsole director of Ferrovie della Calabria Ernesto Ferraro.
The Minister for Disabilities also spoke via video link Alessandra Locatelli. The service was designed with the aim of facilitating the use of public transport by users with mobility difficulties. To be able to use the service which is active 30 hours a week, the user simply contacts the relevant company directly via the telephone numbers published on the dedicated portal of the Region. Specifically, the contract stipulated with public transport operators provides that for urban buses only adequately equipped vehicles are placed in the vehicle fleet and that for other types of buses a rate of adequately equipped vehicles of no less than 30% is maintained. It is also envisaged that, if this percentage is lower, it must be progressively increased up to at least this limit.
Staine’s words
«This new service – declared councilor Staine – is part of a plan to make Calabria more accessible and, therefore, to recover an important infrastructural gap. With my two delegations, Transport and Welfare, we try to combine results; the on-call public transport service for users with mobility difficulties has finally been put into place, therefore – he explained – we want the mayors of the Calabrian communities of all the services that have provision for transport, also with regard to people with disabilities and with reduced mobility. By 2025 we will have a completely renewed fleet on wheels that will make travel possible even for people with reduced mobility.”
