The miracle of San Gennaro, also known as the miracle of the liquefaction of the blood, is a phenomenon that occurs three times a year in Naples, involving the relics of the martyr saint, the patron saint of the city. These events take place on September 19th (the feast day of San Gennaro), the first Saturday in May (today) and December 16th. San Gennaro manifested himself again today at 6.38pm. The official announcement was made by Abbot Vincenzo De Gregorio in the Basilica of Santa Chiara, at the end of a solemn procession. Monsignor Mimmo Battaglia presented the ampoule containing the blood to the faithful. A white handkerchief, symbolizing the miracle that had occurred, was waved in celebration. Tradition has it that the blood of the saint, collected after his martyrdom in 305 AD and preserved in two vials, solidifies and, on the occasion of these dates, liquefies. The liquefaction process is surrounded by great anticipation and popular participation.

Saint Gennaro

During the ceremony, a priest shows the sealed vials to the public before and after the prayer. If the blood liquefies, this is seen as a good omen for Naples and its inhabitants. Otherwise, misfortune or difficulty is feared. Despite numerous investigations and attempts at a scientific explanation, the phenomenon remains shrouded in mystery, with interpretations ranging from the miraculous to the superstitious. The event was greeted with warmth and applause by numerous faithful, present both inside and outside the basilica.
