Bradyseism Campi Flegrei, soil rise of two centimeters in the space of fifteen days

Bradyseism Campi Flegrei, soil rise of two centimeters in the space of fifteen days
Descriptive text here

The speed of lifting in the Campi Flegrei. According to the weekly surveillance bulletin of the Vesuvian Observatory, in the last 15 days there has been an uplift in the area of maximum deformation of about 2 centimetres. If the trend were to last, it could reach 4 centimeters per month instead of 1 centimeter in previous months. More precise data in this sense will be available in the next two weeks.
However, it should be considered that for almost all of 2023 the average monthly lift was around 15 millimeters, therefore higher than the around 10 millimeters recorded up until fifteen days ago.

The crisis of ’84 and greater speed

Since January 2023, the ground rise is approximately 23.5 centimeters, while there were 145 earthquakes in the week from 15 to 21 April. No significant changes were recorded in the other parameters examined by the monitoring stations. It should be reiterated that Lifting speed alone is not a clue which can lead to conclusions on the evolution of bradyseism in the short term. We must then remember that during the bradyseismic crisis of ’84 the speed was more than five times greater than the current one, since in two years the ground rose by approximately 1.70 metres. As scholars continue to explain, as the ground uplift persists in the Phlegraean area, seismic swarms or sequences also continue.

Today the Northern League’s proposals

Meanwhile, after the visit of the Minister of Civil Protection Nello Musumeci who in Bacoli the other day participated in a political demonstration organized by the Brothers of Italy and took the opportunity to illustrate the initiatives adopted for the prevention of risks deriving from bradyseism, yesterday it was the turn of the League. Claudio Durigon, regional coordinator in Campania of Salvini’s party, asked for more targeted interventions against possible damage to homes resulting from seismic swarms. «For the prevention of the risk of bradyseism in the municipalities of the Campi Flegrei – said Durigon -, a plan is needed which is not limited to the still non-existent escape routes or exercises, but extended to prevention of damage or collapse, partial or total, of buildings and not just with `visual detection´. In order to protect the safety of citizens and public and private residential assets, which are not adapted to the new anti-seismic regulations, adequate State intervention is required in the municipalities of the Phlegraean area”. Durigon announced on the subject, a press conference for today at 11 in the area in front of the Solfatara of Pozzuoli, in via Solfatara n. 161. The provincial coordinator of the League, Carmela Rescigno, the city councilor of Naples, Domenico Brescia, and the regional coordinator of «Sud Protagonista» Raffaele De Cicco will participate.

The exercise at the end of May

Meanwhile, the activities of the National Civil Protection continue to test the validity of the evacuation plan of the Campi Flegrei. After the exercise a few days ago, on 30 and 31 May a scenario 3 will be simulated which involves the removal of the people involved. A third exercise, scheduled for October, will concern the plan designed in case of volcanic risk.
