After pilgrimage to Rome of last April 20th (see recalled news), the celebrations for the bicentenary of the death of the Cesena pope Gregorio Barnaba Chiaramonti are preparing to continue with the opening of four thematic exhibitions.

There Piana Hall of the Malatestiana Library of Cesena exhibits “The books of the Pope. Pius VII Chiaramonti in the mirror of his library”. The treasures of Pius VII’s collection of volumes will be visible, with a journey through refined bindings, precious manuscripts, rare printed editions and curiosities, to discover the prince and the pontiff. It can be visited from 27 April to 30 June 2024, on Mondays from 2pm to 7pm and from Tuesday to Sunday and holidays from 10am to 7pm (last entry 6pm).

In the setting of the living room Ghini Palace are hosted “The Pope’s Gifts”, a series of objects, liturgical vestments and artefacts connected to Chiaramonti, donated to him or by him. Among these, the sedan chair with which the pontiff, prisoner of Napoleoncrossed the Moncenis Pass (over 2,000 metres) during the journey from France to Savona in August 1809. They can be admired from 27 April to 30 June, Friday and Saturday, from 10am to 12pm and from 3pm to 6pm and on Sunday from 10 to 12.

In the urban church of Santa Cristinaa jewel inspired by the Pantheon and commissioned by Pius VII, to the pontifical architect Giuseppe Valadier, will be possible to admire “The Pope’s Vestments”, a selection of refined liturgical vestments. The exhibition is open on the same days and times as the previous one.

In the Pio VII room of the Monte Abbey the exhibition “The narrated Pope” opens to the public. In the age that includes the pontificates of Pius VI Braschi (1775-1779) and Pius VII Chiaramonti (1800-1823) the print production with the portraits and stories of the protagonists, in a range of descriptive scenes of a religious nature, but not only. This material, both poor and of artistic value, takes on the value of a document, both spiritual and political, becoming a real instrument of information, propaganda, diffusion of religious and civil virtues, as well as a vehicle of exaltation and celebratory message. This exhibition can also be visited from 27 April to 30 June, on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 12pm and from 3pm to 6pm.

The exhibition project is promoted by the Diocese of Cesena-Sarsina, the Abbey of Santa Maria del Monte, the Municipality of Cesena and the Malatestiana Library. L’inauguration is expected on Saturday April 27at 11, in the Lignea della Malatestiana room, in the presence of the bishop Douglas Regattieriof the abbot Dom Mauro Maccarinelli and the mayor Enzo Lattuca.
