Descriptive text here

Based on data from the Chambers of Commerce Business Registry, 7,939 companies were founded in Piedmont during the first quarter of 2024, 190 units more than what was recorded in the first quarter of 2023, for a positive change on an annual basis of 2.5%. . In the same period, the companies that ceased their activity showed a much more sustained trend, they numbered 9,873 (net of official cancellations), 486 more than in the same period of the previous year (+5, 2%). The synthesis between the two flows leads to a negative balance of 1,934 units, the decrease was 1,638 in the first quarter of 2023.

The numbers

The overall stock of companies registered at the end of March 2024 in the Business Register of the Piedmontese Chambers of Commerce thus amounts to 420,693 units, confirming Piedmont in 7th position among the Italian regions, with 7.1% of national companies.

These are the main findings on the trend of business demographics in the first quarter of 2024 that emerge from the Movimprese data, processed by Unioncamere Piemonte on the basis of the Chambers of Commerce Business Register.

The balance between new registrations and terminations translates into a growth rate of -0.46%, worse both compared to what was recorded for the Piedmontese entrepreneurial fabric during the first quarter of 2023 (+0.38%), and compared to the result achieved in the first quarter of 2024 at an overall national level (-0.18%). However, it should be underlined that the first quarter of the year traditionally shows a negative dynamic due to the concentration, in this period, of the registration of terminations which occurred at the end of the previous year.

Even during the first three months of 2024, the performance of the Piedmontese entrepreneurial fabric by legal form confirms a trend that has been underway for several years now, with joint-stock companies recording an expansion of their respective business base and a decreasing dynamic for the other realities. The balance between joint-stock companies born in Piedmont during the first quarter of 2024 and those closed led to a growth rate of +0.58%. Among the remaining forms, the worst result is once again that recorded by partnerships (-0.86%), followed by other legal forms (-0.79%) and individual businesses (-0.69%) . Today the over 91 thousand joint-stock companies constitute 21.7% of the total companies based in Piedmont, compared to 15.8% ten years ago.

In the first quarter of 2024, almost all sectors showed negative growth rates. Other services appear substantially stable (-0.01%), construction shows a decline of 0.35%, followed by tourism with -0.42%. Industry in the strict sense recorded a contraction of its business base by 0.54% and agriculture fell by 0.95%. The worst data belongs to trade whose growth rate stands at -1.02%.

Finally, the regional trend is the result of the negative dynamics created by the various provincial realities. The territories of northern Piedmont achieve less negative results than the overall average. Verbania records a growth rate of -0.16%, followed by Biella (-0.33%), Vercelli (-0.35%) and Novara (-0.37%). Turin (-0.47%), Alessandria (-0.48%) and Cuneo (-0.49%) show a rate in line with that of Piedmont, while Asti suffers the most marked decline (-0.62%).
