After the demonstration called in front of the Teramo prison in recent days, the Abruzzo Penitentiary Police union came to Rome on this Friday 3 May to reiterate the difficulties experienced in their penitentiary facilities and underline the inadequacy of the regional administrator.

“We are tired and demotivated – the exclusive comment to our microphones by the secretary Giuseppe Ninu – serious pathologies are accentuating which certainly do not help to support a burden of this kind. Naturally, those who have to act are careful not to face a situation of this type. In fact, there are no human and financial resources and the Italian prison system has imploded. It would require a very specific structural intervention, i.e. it would have to be addressed as a natural disaster. Even if we know how it ends in those circumstances“.

“Reduce training times”

Secretary Ninu also asks to reduce “training times. In my time, with a three-month course they sent you to prison and you trained there. Today, with a quarter of school, a course exclusively based on legal and technical issues, a new agent can easily be started in penitentiary facilities where he will complete his professionalism with real practice and not with tourists in the internship phase“.

The number one of the Abruzzo penitentiary police union underlines how “inmates who are guilty of further crimes within the prison, primarily with assault on staff, they should be transferred to special institutions, far from their homes and above all with a cut in benefits. The phenomenon of aggression will certainly decrease drastically. Furthermore, those with serious and proven pathologies must be transferred to places of treatment. In prison, healthcare is useless to say the least. It must also be said that, unlike us free citizens, urgency is a must for prisoners“.
