I don’t think there will be significant M&A between banks

“I don’t think there will be significant operations in the country but for us, if there were, it would be a positive factor.” The Managing Director and CEO of Intesa Sanpaolo, Carlo Messinato a question on the consolidation of the banking sector in Italy, at the conclusion of the conference call with financial analysts on the results of the first quarter of 2024.

“To carry out consolidation not only does it take someone very intelligent who understands what the best financial conditions are, but you also have to be bold to do the operations in the right way, not create discussions that drag on for months, evaluate things well, do the ‘offer and implement the deal,” Messima explained.

“In this area we were probably the best player in Europe to carry out these operations, also considering the quality of UBI which was very positive. Returning to the Italian sector, to carry out consolidation it is not only enough to be intelligent to carry out an operation on a theoretical level but you have to know how to do it on a practical level.”
