Descriptive text here
On the occasion of the 31st anniversary of the dies natalis of the venerable Don Tonino Bello, next April 20, the diocese is promoting some events to explore the human and Christian virtues of the “bishop with the apron”.

On Saturday 20th at 6.00 pm, in the Cathedral of S. Maria Assunta, the conference “In the footsteps of Pino Puglisi and Tonino Bello” will be attended by HE Mons. Corrado Lorefice, Metropolitan Archbishop of Palermo. Following at 7.30 pm Mons. Lorefice will preside over the solemn concelebration. The events will be broadcast live on the website and social channels of the diocese.

In this regard, we report some statements from Mayor Tommaso Minervini.

“”Never trade honesty for a handful of lentils”. The strength of the secular thought of Don Tonino Bello, bishop of the diocese of Molfetta, Ruvo, Giovinazzo and Terlizzi, whose Dies anniversary is today, 20 April Natalis, it’s all here. And it goes straight to the heart. And yes, because he who, when he didn’t use his legs as a means of transport, he drove a rickety Fiat 500, he always made communication, words and the power of ideas his most beautiful pastoral work. He understood that to speak to people it was necessary to immerse himself in everyday life. Without asking. Without ever going up to the altar. Indeed, putting himself in the eyes of the poor.

“He is in the port of Bari when the Albanians disembark; he is in Gioia del Colle to protest against the cumbersome presence of armaments; on 31 December 1992 he is marching in the name of peace; he is in the dark alleys of the city picking up beggars, for to offer his smile, his love; he is in the episcope to welcome Mary, the woman of the people, the woman of the “popular districts, heavy with sweat and soaked in stabbio, where the hovels of the poor, if they still remain standing, it is because they support each other”; he is on the port to talk to the fishermen, at the station to meet drug addicts, in the suburbs to accompany the least fortunate. And today, more than ever, his thoughts resonate with relevance. And the need for Peace erupts in our consciences” commented the mayor.
