Norovirus in the water: what is happening between Lombardy and Trentino

In light of some cases of acute gastroenteritis which occurred primarily in the Tonale area, the mayor of Ponte di Legno (province of Brescia) Ivan Faustinelli has ordered theanalyses of some water samples taken from the water network in the Passo del Tonale area.

The analyzes conducted by the Mountain ATS led to the discovery of traces of Norovirus. In light of this, the mayor of Ponte di Legno Ivan Faustinelli signed, on 10 April, aorder which prohibits drinking tap water.

Traces of Norovirus were detected in water samples taken from the water supply in the Passo del Tonale area.

The ordinance of the Municipality of Ponte di Legno on Norovirus

The communication from the mayor of Ponte di Legno

In addition to the ordinance, on 10 April the mayor of Ponte di Legno Ivan Faustinelli sent a communication to the population to explain the reason for the decision adopted.

In the message, regarding the episodes of acute gastroenteritis that occurred in the Passo del Tonale area, it is specified that an initial discussion with the ATS had led to the hypothesis that it was “a airborne viral formas several cases of similar gastroenteritis were also detected in the Trentino part of Passo del Tonale and in Ponte di Legno, served, as is known, by different aqueduct networks”.

The samples taken from the aqueduct, however, detected traces of Norovirus. For this reason, “for the principle of maximum precaution”, the order was issued.

Ivan Faustinelli was keen to clarify: “This does not necessarily mean that the cases of gastroenteritis detected at Tonale are due to the use of water, as it is well established that the majority of people who have experienced the symptoms have never had any contact with with the aqueduct network where the Norovirus was detected”.

The mayor also clarified that “Norovirus can appear in water in exceptional cases and can be eradicated by sanitizing the network”.
