L’AQUILA – For a few days in the hamlet. of Santa Rufina di Roio, a situation is taking place which we hope can be taken as an example also in other localities considering that a simple citizen has begun to organize the waste collection area by putting up signs inviting people to use the appropriate recycling bins and not abandoning bulky items.

It had been happening for some time that the wind was carrying papers and plastic in the square adjacent to the cemetery and also, during the night, someone had started to deposit sofas and televisions, hiding them behind the unsorted waste bins.

In light of the “dignity” which must be the key principle of a people, this good citizen, armed with his own personal tools, has created fixed hooks that allow the bins to remain closed even if there is wind as well as having placed a sign inviting people to respect the rule that requires transporting bulky items to the Bazzano area where, free of charge, said goods are collected by the ASM.

Dedicating time to the community is a simple way of doing good by creating well-being for yourself and others. It means looking beyond one’s own “vegetable garden” thinking that giving a nice welcome to anyone who passes through those parts means presenting your country, proudly, in the best dress. The management of individual citizens can obviously also be extended to other areas. Think of the internal streets of towns that are invaded by plants and paper thrown here and there… even there the community must intervene to do what the “streets”. People employed by the municipality who in the past had the task of keeping the streets tidy.

Now this professional figure is no longer present but simple citizens and good Christians could join in and take care of the space in front of their homes, so little would be enough and I am sure that the example given by that citizen, Dr. GIOCONDO PERILLI, AGRONOMIST, it will be imitated by others out of love for their territory and respect for this world, fruit of the Creator’s hands, and given to us men.

I share some concrete advice from the encyclical “Laudato si”, with which the Holy Father Francis encourages us to collaborate to protect and build our common home, our world, environment, society. They are small actions that spread good in society, beyond what can be verified, because they cause a good in this land that always tends to spread, sometimes invisibly.

Here they are:

1-Heating: he advised us to dress warmer and avoid turning it on.

2- Avoid the use of plastic and paper materials.

3- Reduce water consumption.

4- Separate waste.

5- Cook only what you can reasonably eat.

6- Treat other living beings with care.

7- Use public transport or share the same vehicle between several people.

8- Plant trees.

9- Turn off unnecessary lights.

10- Thank God before and after meals.

God bless our land, our world. Blessings. Father Ralf Prada (Don Osman).
