Italo Ormanni, farewell to the gentleman prosecutor: he investigated the mysteries of Italy
Descriptive text here

Unfortunately this time it’s true. The magistrate Italo Ormanni died yesterday at the age of 88 in Rome, in the Quisisana clinic, where he had been hospitalized since Monday and where he had undergone an angioplasty. On December 3, 2022, his death was announced by mistake. His son Roberto joked about the great information short circuit, writing an article entitled: “The dead man is in good health”. The same sarcasm that characterized his father, who loved to tell funny anecdotes about what happened to him during work, to sometimes tone down the “weight” of his role: they seemed like jokes, but instead it was real life. Then, during the interrogations, he returned to take on the role of the great prosecutor.

A LONG CAREER
Ormanni’s career, in the judiciary from 1961 to 2010, ran parallel to that of the country, given that he was involved in some of the most important judicial cases of recent decades and then found new popularity in the TV show “Forum”. Neapolitan by birth, he was deputy prosecutor in his city and followed investigations into the Camorra which led to the arrests of bosses such as Raffaele Cutolo, Michele Zaza, Lorenzo Nuvoletta. In 1982 it was applied to the Court of Cassation. He became a consultant to the Prime Minister of the Giovanni Spadolini government for problems relating to organized crime and a consultant to the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission together with Giovanni Falcone from 1984 to 1990. In 1989 he was invited to the United States for a series of meetings with the Goddess, the FBI and Department of Justice officials. In 1994 he arrived in Rome, where he held the role of deputy prosecutor until 2008. In the capital Ormanni dealt with some of the most famous news cases of the last century: from the kidnapping of Emanuela Orlandi, to the crime in Via Poma in which he was Simonetta Cesaroni killed; both cases still unsolved. He conducted the investigations that led to the identification of the perpetrators of the murder of the student of the “La Sapienza” University Marta Russo, of the person responsible who raped and then massacred Mrs. Giovanna Reggiani at the Tor di Quinto station in Rome, of the murderers of Maria Grazia Cutuli in Afghanistan, of the murder of Countess Alberica Filo della Torre; passing through the investigations into the execution of Professor Massimo D’Antona and the New Red Brigades, and into the members of the gang of kidnappers of the two Van Goghs and the Cezanne kept in the National Gallery of Modern Art. For the high number of works stolen and returned to the state heritage he was awarded a silver medal by the President of the Republic.

As department head of the Ministry of Justice, he dealt with the extradition from Brazil of the fugitive terrorist Cesare Battisti. Author of several criminology publications, Ormanni was a contract professor at the University of Naples in the School of Specialization in Forensic Medicine and President of the section of the Provincial Tax Commission of Naples.

THE TV BRACKET
In 2011 he donned the toga again to participate as judge-referee in the famous television show “Forum”, of which he was a part until May 2013. “It’s easier to give a kiss than to forget it”, he said at the end of one of the controversies he had been called upon to resolve. Among his passions, in addition to law, there were also art, theater and good music. His funeral will be held in Rome in the early afternoon of Monday.
