TREVISO – Five little houses made of wood one meter wide, 60 centimeters high and the same depth, placed on the Paradise peninsula and intended to house the eggs of 17 geese who have chosen to live at the foot of the Walls and along the promenades, represent the first step towards the full redevelopment of the symbolic monument of the city. Yesterday the mayor Mario Conte and the deputy Alessandro Manera had them inaugurated not without challenging fate that arrived in the guise of a mother goose, who “caught” the mayor guilty of having got too close to his nest: «Nothing to say – he underlined, rubbing his calf that had just been hit – I got too close, he still she’s right.” Placed right against the wall, the five houses are only the first sign of what is to come. The Paradise Peninsula – “Within a few months”, assures Conte – will become one green area available to families. It will be equipped with catwalks, adequate lighting, pedestrian paths, shaded areas for refreshment. It’s all part of the project 15 million euro redevelopment of the Mura approved and financed by the Pnrr. The construction site started a few days ago, as demonstrated by the barriers along the gardens and the workers at work close to the former skate track.

THE TARGET

Meanwhile, the first to benefit from the new life of the Walls are the geese: «These little houses – underlined Manera – created in collaboration with the Animal Protection unit of the Local Police, want to protect the eggs of the palmipedes from the corvids present in the area, especially gray crows and magpies, which often raid their nests”. There are 17 geese on the Paradise Peninsula, mainly geese Romagna breed. The hatching period runs from early March to June. The eggs usually laid are from 12 to 20 units. The incubation time is 30 days. In one nest there are seven, defended with great tenacity by the goose who, after targeting the mayor, also kept the deputy away.

THE SCENERY

«These houses – comments the mayor – are used to keep the geese’s eggs safe from crows and magpies. They are a small signal that goes in the direction of animal protection, created with the help of the local police protection unit. Our administration demonstrates great sensitivity towards animals, just think that pets in the city have exceeded 42 thousand units. This means that for every two citizens there is an animal, so it is a way that must be protected and respected.” But the objective remains the redevelopment of the Walls, of which the Paradise Peninsula will be one of the most suggestive corners: «The construction site started a few hundred meters ahead of where we are, but the Paradise Peninsula which is now reserved exclusively for animals will one day become a place to live in, obviously with great respect and education, using the walks that will pass by right from here. The Walls will be cleared of vegetation and restored. An operation that will allow us to have a different point of view of one of the monuments of our city: the city walls surrounded by greenery, among the animals with a fascinating panoramic view.” A fundamental element will then be the new lighting: «Through a public-private partnership we want to enhance our monumental heritage. Above all, we want to enhance this great restoration and redevelopment project of the Walls with an adequate lighting system that can enhance its beauty and increase its charm.
