VARESE – The employment rate is growing in the province of Varese, with a clear improvement. The latest data processed on Istat sources by the Economic Analysis Office of the Varese Chamber of Commerce highlight the good performance of the labor market during 2023. The number of employed people reached the maximum value of 391 thousand. The growth was 15 thousand units compared to 2022, while the increase over 2018 was 10 thousand workers.
Employment rates are rising
The expansion of the labor market has led to an increase in employment rates for both male and female components. Taking into consideration the working age range, therefore from 15 to 64 years, the Varese employment rate today is close to 70% (69.6%), aligning with the Lombard regional average (69.3%) and far exceeding the national one (61.5%). Of particular note is the women returning to work: after the minimum level reached in 2020 (56.2%) and linked to the difficulties of the Covid-19 emergency, female employment is on the rise, up to 61.7% reached last year. Despite this improvement however, the gap remains high with the male labor market (77.3%), equal to over 15 percentage points. A positive effect of this dynamic is the decrease in the unemployment rate which, again at provincial level, fell to 3.6%, approaching physiological values and well below the national figure of 7.7%. More active Varese residents
Going into detail it appears the youth situation is improving: the unemployment rate for the 15-34 age group, standing at 7.4% in 2023, is decreasing compared to the previous year (11.1%) and substantially aligned with the regional level (6.9%) . In particular, the working situation of young women is improving, where the unemployment indicator has decreased from 14.8% to 10.6%. The study by the Economic Analysis Office of the Varese Chamber of Commerce, which can be consulted on the OsserVa statistical portal, highlights another significant fact: not only does unemployment decrease, but also the inactivity rate, which expresses the share of people who give up looking for work. I am therefore less so the people of Varese who appear so discouraged that they don’t even look for a job. Their percentage in the twelve months fell from 29.5% to 27.8%.
Fewer hours of “cash”
The hours of redundancy fund authorized in Varese companies during 2023 amounted to 10 million and 737 thousand, in 11% decrease compared to the previous year. At a sectoral level, the greatest weight was in chemicals and plastics (30%), mechanics (26%) and textiles (17%). The most significant reduction was recorded in transport and communications (-91% compared to 2022). This is a direct effect of the recovery of Malpensa airport. Finally, the contracts stipulated in the last twelve months totaled 124,800, with a positive balance compared to terminations of employment equal to 9,835 units.
