Via Giordano, Portesani: traffic studies and if necessary, new road

The roads in the southern area of the city and in particular via Cadore and via Giordano were at the center of the meeting organized by Forza Italia on Thursday evening with Alessandro Portesani at the headquarters of the neighborhood committee. Speakers alongside the centre-right mayoral candidate and city councilor Saverio Simi were Enrico Bresciani, former municipal manager of the Traffic and Mobility sector, and Federico Fasani, city councilor and architect.

An electoral meeting, but also the opportunity to take stock of perhaps the most discussed and talked about road axis of the last 10 years: from the cancellation of the southern road from the PGT to the restyling project with cycle paths during the first Galimberti administration; from the promise of a public car park behind the Piccioni paint factory which was never built, to the roundabout at the intersection with Via Bosco and the intervention on the former Snum.

Fasani, Portesani, Simi

“Over the years, Via Giordano, like Via Dante, has been seen only as a thoroughfare, not as a function of its residents,” said Fasani, “we need to restore dignity to the places,” this means acting on elements such as paving, greenery, environmental comfort . The proposal: to immediately return to thinking about traffic flows, traffic lights, alternative routes, and possibly also new roads.

“Via Giordano is the demonstration of the absence of vision of the Galimberti-Virgilii administration here, as in other cases. You have been treated a bit like guinea pigs,” said Portesani, addressing the residents. “Many experiments have been carried out, none have responded to the problems that existed,” he said. “Our first step is listening to the needs and starting from there with the projects, not vice versa as has happened so far”.

“Within the first year of our mandate we intend to present to the people of Cremona a definitive project for the redevelopment of Via Giordano which starts from real data and has the following objectives: updating the traffic analysis, through an origin/destination survey of vehicles; Based on the results obtained, we believe it is a priority to act to lighten the load of vehicles by favoring alternative routes.
Pedestrian crossings must be made safe and traffic must be streamlined through the adoption of a coordinated traffic light system that reduces the “stop and go” of vehicles, a source of pollution and inconvenience for motorists themselves.

The intersections with the access roads to the city must be rationalized and made safer; the transit of pedestrians and bicycles must take place on paths at different heights compared to the roadway and protected. Restyling interventions will also have to be planned on the parallel Via Cadore, to make it attractive to weak users, encouraging them to use it as a priority, without changing the current traffic directions.
Furthermore, “an urban greenery project must be studied and implemented that makes living and transiting more comfortable; and incentivized the establishment of neighborhood and service activities on the ground floors of buildings, guaranteeing, where possible, short parking spaces for customers and longer parking spaces for residents”.
