Exhibition “The Typographic Marches of the Ancient Fund”

On the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day, which is celebrated on April 23rd, the Sebastiano Bagolino Civic Library is organizing, from April 21st to 23rd, the bibliographic exhibition “The typographical Marche of the ancient collection” with display of precious sixteenth-century works.
The typographic brand, one of the elements of the ancient printed book, identified printers, publishers and booksellers, testifying, every time, to the originality of the copy that the reader found in his hands: it was the trademark, the forerunner of the editorial copyright.
The sixteenth century was a golden century for typographical brands, their variety was surprising: speaking and allusive brands, symbolic and allegorical, classical and mythological figures, religious emblems and patron saints.
The ancient collection of the Sebastiano Bagolino civic library houses a precious collection of sixteenth-century works by the most famous and appreciated printers of the time: the Manutius, whose brand is represented by a dolphin twisting around an anchor, the Giunti with the heraldic lily, the Giolito de’ Ferrari with the phoenix rising from the flames, the Sessa represented by a cat with a mouse in its mouth, are some publishers, with their original brands, which can be appreciated by visiting the exhibition.
We would like to remind you that World Book and Copyright Day was created under the aegis of UNESCO in 1996 to promote reading, the publication of books and the protection of copyright, and is included in the national campaign ‘The May of books ‘, promoted by the Ministry of Culture and CEPELL the Center for Books and Reading.

  • During the exhibition, consultation and study services in the Reading Room are suspended.
