63 years old. The story of the eco-monster lasted that long Viale Colli Aminei, a huge five-storey building built in the 1960s and never completed which, over the years, had become a meeting place for homeless people, drug addicts and criminals of all kinds. A few hours ago, the news that the inhabitants of the neighborhood had been waiting for arrived: finally, thanks also to the agreement with the owners of the ruined structure, the demolition work on the building will begin at the beginning of May. Work which, in truth, had been ordered by the municipality of Naples already in the early 2000s but which had been lost in a sea of appeals and legal events.

The Tar in 2001 he had annulled the Municipality’s decision to proceed with the demolition due to a defect in shape but in 2020 the State Council completely overturned the administrative court’s decision, ordering the demolition of the building. The large building on Viale Colli Aminei is just one of the many examples of hands on the city that were recorded in those troubled and tumultuous years. A sea of residential buildings that floated at the limits – often crossing the borders – of illegal building and which in just a few years have completely changed the face of the city, often for the worse.

The works will be carried out following a scheme designed to cause as little inconvenience as possible to residents. First of all, as the city councilor said Gennaro Acampora, which followed the matter closely, the external surfaces will be removed manually. Then we will proceed with mechanized procedures for the total removal of the building’s skeleton. The timing, as the Urban Planning councilor explained to the citizens Laura Lietowill follow a timetable designed to also reduce the foreseeable inconveniences due to the transit of heavy vehicles used for collecting rubble. This very last phase, in fact, should take place during the school closure period, so as not to further congest traffic in an already habitually busy area. The entire process of the works, as established by the Urban Planning Department of the Municipality of Naples, should last approximately two months.

«I remember that I was a child – explained Acampora – and I went to school a few meters from that building whose demolition had been talked about for many years. Today, thanks also to the commitment of the Urban Planning Department, a matter that has been waiting for too long to be resolved is finally over. It was a collective effort which saw as protagonists not only the institutional subjects but also and above all the citizens and the neighborhood civic committees who were on the front line collecting signatures, forwarding petitions and keeping attention high on this difficult matter. We also want to underline the availability of the owner of the structure who has made demolition plans available to minimize the impact on traffic. Twenty years ago the last attempt was made to demolish that structure – continues the city councilor – today the answer finally arrives for those citizens who have been waiting for it for a long time.”
