“Celebrate work and claim rights. May 1st has been and will always be a special day, an anniversary that has spanned the centuries, demanding recognition of the dignity of millions of workers. May Day is a celebration that never goes out of fashion, on the contrary.” The general secretaries of CGIL, CISL and UIL of Latina, Giuseppe Massafra, Roberto Cecere and Luigi Garullo, say this.
“Just think of how work is changing its skin – add the trade unionists – and how precarious employment is negatively impacting the working lives of thousands of young and old people. The Pontine reality says that last year only seven percent of the contracts activated were permanent, while in 2022 they represented 16 percent. Going back in time we notice the drift of job instability even more: from 2016 to 2022 the balance between activated and terminated stable relationships caused our province to lose almost 25 thousand permanent contracts (24924)”.
“Unequivocal numbers – continue Massafra, Cecere and Garullo – which are added to those that photograph another aspect of work, safety. Or rather the lack of safety in the workplace. Here too the Pontine panorama is gloomy. In the first two months of 2024 there were 531 workplace accidents in our province. A number which, after Rome, places our territory in second place for insecurity. Insecurity which unfortunately often turns black: eleven people died at work throughout Lazio, 9 in Rome and two in Latina”. “May Day retains its peculiarity – the trade unionists conclude – a moment of unity and solidarity to continue to affirm the importance of work and workers’ rights and their daily safety in a constantly evolving world. We ask for safe and dignified work, therefore. And we will reiterate it in Piazza del Popolo, leaving space for the music of many young artists with the aim of creating a moment of culture, art and reflection”.
