“On Varrà and Marchionni I tell you that…”

Donato Macchia on Monday evening during Stop&Gol he talked about many things, facts and situations and obviously also about ds Varrà and the technician Marchionni sacked on Saturday evening after the defeat against Foggia. An intervention as decisive as it was emotional in which Macchia on live TV not only reassured the square by instilling courage and security but also showing the human side, the suffering, the weaknesses of those who love the red and blue colours. The decision to send Marchionni and Varrà away was not expected, it arrived hot at the end of the match but taken with equal certainty: “We already said a few weeks ago that the necessary points had to be scored, it’s obvious that after four games in which you only score one point, I felt the need to do something even though it was close to the end of the championship. It was necessary to do it now and not wait for the end of the championship. Every decision isn’t a gut decision, you have to think but do it quickly and this was it.” Yet in the almost two years of regency, there have been no negative comments surrounding the former rossoblù director, seen as untouchable but who in the end also paid: “Someone thought that Varrà was untouchable for some stupid reason, even with declarations worthy of a lawsuit. Varrà is the same one who received indiscriminate praise for the signing campaign, unfortunately from what was the subjective quality of each one it was not revealed on the pitch. We needed to give a strong and timely message and an assumption of further responsibility to the team. I thank Varrà’s work, he who doesn’t do doesn’t make mistakes. The field did not prove us right. We did what we thought we should do to collect what was needed to ensure that Potenza is registered in the Lega Pro.” Potenza which has grown also thanks to Varrà but above all to the invaluable work of the managing director Nicola Macchia to whom patron Macchia entrusted the keys of the company: “I can only thank Nicola who is doing an extraordinary job, we took a totally non-existent machine and Nicola is doing an important job and it is there for all to see and when you do things you can make mistakes, we have to collect the healthy part from the mistakes and improve to try to do better. We did what was right to give dignity to this club, a dignity that it had lost through no fault of the fans who never failed to give their contribution and feel the shirt with great love and we cannot betray this love that so many people feel for this shirt. Over time we will make a great club even inside the pitch, we have to improve and these two years have been useful for us to understand. Our fans deserve to be able to rejoice for their shirt and their team.”. Macchia then focuses on the mistakes made: “There wasn’t a specific mistake, we certainly didn’t want to make mistakes and unfortunately the choices (in terms of coaches, ed.) were not happy ones and choosing the right coach is never easy.” And on the role of the president and shareholder: “A president must not be on the field every minute of the day, I am president of a board of directors headed by a director and my presence must be there at particular moments, and as always I do not I never hide. I don’t thrive on protagonism and I don’t like it, I don’t need it; those who preceded me are no longer here, now I am here and the money we invest is the result of our work. I have decided to put part of the work I create at service, I am proud to share the Potenza Calcio project with those who love and care about these colours.”
