Bad weather: rain and thunderstorms across much of Italy

From today’s evening, a new disturbed area will gradually move from the western Mediterranean towards our country, continuing the phase of severe bad weather already underway, starting from the North-West and extending to the Tyrrhenian sectors and part of the North-East.

Based on the available forecasts, the Department of Civil Protection in agreement with the regions involved – which is responsible for activating the civil protection systems in the territories concerned – has issued a new warning of adverse weather conditions, which follows and extends the one issued Yesterday. The weather phenomena, impacting on the different areas of the country, could determine hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities which are reported, in a national summary, in the national criticality and alert bulletin which can be consulted on the Department website (www.protezionecivile.gov.it).

The warning predicts the persistence of widespread precipitation, including thunderstorms, from the early hours of tomorrow, Thursday 2 May, across Valle d’Aosta and Piedmont, extending to central-western Emilia-Romagna and Veneto. During the morning, rainfall, ranging from scattered to widespread and even thunderstorms, will also affect Tuscany, Lazio and Campania. The phenomena will be accompanied by heavy showers, frequent electrical activity, local hailstorms and strong gusts of wind.

On the basis of the predicted and ongoing phenomena, a yellow alert has been assessed for tomorrow, Thursday 2 May, in part of Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna and in the entire territory of Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio and Campania.

The meteorological and critical situation forecast for Italy is updated daily based on new forecasts and the evolution of the phenomena, and is available on the website of the Department of Civil Protection (www.protezionecivile.gov.it), together with the general rules of behavior to follow in case of bad weather. Information on regional alert levels, on specific critical issues that could concern individual territories and on the prevention actions adopted are managed by the territorial civil protection structures, in contact with which the Department will monitor the evolution of the situation.
