In recent days the award ceremony took place with the presentation of the 2024 yellow flag for the 7th edition of FIAB-Comuni Ciclabili, the recognition of the Italian Environment and Bicycle Federation – from 2017 to date already awarded to 180 cities – which evaluates and certifies the commitment of Italian territories in promoting cycling as a model of sustainable mobility, a fundamental choice for the successful outcome of the virtuous transition of our cities.

The first 42 bicycle-friendly city awards for the year 2024 had already been assigned by FIAB in the opening event last February, while the closing ceremony is scheduled for the summer, with the delivery of the last yellow flags.

Having become part of the Cycling Municipalities since the first edition, Pordenone once again confirms its score of 4 bikesmiles this year, thanks to the doubling of the Zone 30 surface area with the inclusion of speed moderation elements (such as raised intersections on the roads of traffic remained at 50 km/h) and the lowest number of sponsored motoring events.

The Administration declares itself satisfied with this recognition, obtained thanks to the work of the Offices and the collaboration with the associations dealing with sustainable mobility, FIAB Aruotalibera first and foremost – with which there is constant dialogue to improve the infrastructural network and to promote dedicated events to cycling mobility – and Small Steps, considering that the Pedibus projects have a significant weight in assigning the score, and almost all the primary schools in Pordenone have adopted this service, which is also important for the health of children and the environment.

It is certainly not a given to maintain high scores over the years that guarantee the assignment of the yellow flag, even improving one’s “cyclability”, as happens in Pordenone. The Municipality’s next objective concerns the implementation of the current bikesharing service, which will be made more modern and efficient thanks to the technologies currently available, the creation of new school roads, cycle paths and cycle lanes, the organization of a marking of bicycles in order to reduce citizens’ fear of theft (which leads many citizens not to use bicycles). Furthermore, we want to create signage in the city section of the AIDA cycle route (Alta Italia Da Tratraversare, which connects the Moncenisio pass with Trieste) in order to facilitate the identification of a safe route through the city, also for the benefit of cycle tourism.
