Agreement between the basin authority and the municipal rowers of Florence to clean the Arno from waste

The general secretary ofNorthern Apennines District Basin Authority Gaia Checcucci, and by the president of Florence Municipal Rowing Society Giancarlo Fianchisti they signed the first one memorandum of understanding For safeguard the Arno river cleaning it from plastic and waste.

The agreement is supported with 280 thousand euros a year for three years which the Basin Authority will allocate not only to Florence municipal rowers but also to other associations that will participate in the project aims to save the Arno, the sea, and other rivers and streams from pollution which border the territory of the Northern Apennines District.

Are provided periodic boat tripsaccording to a timetable shared with the Authority, for the recovery of floating waste in the Arno river in Florence, in the city section between the weir of the Nave in Rovezzano and that of San Niccolò.

“Whoever is on the river and enjoys it is the best sentinelCheccucci stated – and it can help us do everything possible to contain pollution and free the waters from floating waste. The result can be achieved not only by physically removing this waste, but also through the environmental education of children and all those who approach the Arno in any form”.

Fianchisti stated that the rowers, through “the 400 members and the hundred young people from the competitive sector”, they will undertake to clean up the river “but also to spread that culture of respect for the environment which can preserve the Arno from reckless gestures such as abandoning glasses, plates, rags and even tables, chairs, bicycles and shopping trolleys in the water”.
