Everything is ready for the weekend in Catania and its province.
Culture in the foreground with the last days of the Book Festival in Zafferana Etnea and above all with the semi-finalists of the Premio Strega at the Benedictine Monastery.
The theater, however, is the undisputed protagonist with many shows, all interesting: ‘La Mite’, ‘Alexander Hamilton’, ‘Maurizio IV’, ‘Stanlio&Ollio’, ‘Friends have no secrets’ and ‘Small money’ at the ABC Theatre.
Also arousing curiosity is the screening of ‘Iena’ Giulia Innocenzi’s docufilm ‘Food for profit’, scheduled at the Eco Hostel.
It’s the countdown to the appointment with the first national stage of the Premio Strega which will be held on Saturday 20th at 11.30 am in the De Carlo Auditorium of Disum, in the former Benedictine Monastery in Catania. The twelve semi-finalist authors of the Strega Prize will participate in the free initiative organized by the Catania Book Festival, supported by the University of Catania, the Sicilian Region and the Balena Bianca consultancy firm. This year too, two authors from Catania who are young but already esteemed by the public and critics will present the first stage of the tour which will visit other Italian cities: Mattia Insolia and Lorena Spampinato.
Defined by the critic Leonid Grossman as “one of the most powerful stories of desperation in universal literature”, The Meek is a little-known but infinitely profound story by Fyodor Dostoevsky and is one of the first streams of consciousness ever written. This fascinating story surrounded by a tragic nihilism is at the center of the piece which, with the adaptation and dramaturgy of Valeria La Bua (who also directs together with Davide A. Toscano), sees the actors Giovanni Arezzo and Alessandra on stage Pandolfini.
From 13 to 20 April 2024, a week of events, meetings, exhibitions, shows and narratives in the shadow of the volcano. The program includes over 200 events for children, teenagers, teachers, parents and adults including meetings in schools, events, book presentations and editorial news, exhibitions, shows, educational seminars on writing, reading and illustration. Every year the festival involves over 10,000 students of all levels, from nursery schools to lower secondary schools, but also offers a rich calendar of events open to the public. This Sunday in April from the Ladroni cave to the enchanting Cerrita forest, one of the most uncontaminated places on the volcano. You will start from Piano delle Donne, on the Mareneve, a few hundred meters lower than the crossroads for the Citelli Refuge. You will begin (and end) by visiting the suggestive Thieves’ Cave, equipped with a helmet provided by the organization, which is located at the beginning of the path.
After the great success of City of stars and The Greatest Show, the Ouroboros Association is back on stage with another great production: Alexander Hamilton, one of the greatest Broadway musicals of recent years (to purchase tickets click on following link). A breath of hip hop, set in the post-American Revolution, which has already overwhelmed Catania in the first two dates staged on 12 and 13 April at the Teatro Ambasciatori. The next appointments will be Friday 19th and Saturday 20th. Alexander Hamilton is the story of one of the fundamental figures for the birth of the United States of America, one of its founding fathers. First, supporter of the American Revolution and right-hand man of George Washington, then, supporter of federalism and Prime Minister of the Treasury, today printed on the $10 bill.
A new itinerary full of stories about the ghosts that populate the city, legends and mysteries, will be revealed through a walk in the heart of the historic center of Catania. Edited by Maria Grazia Attanasi, tourist and historian guide, with the narration of the journalist and writer Gian Luca Marino, specialized in mysterious itineraries, in collaboration with the Panorama Sicilia Association. Ghosts, haunted houses and places, legends, episodes and testimonies bordering on the incredible. Catania is a mysterious city that reserves many surprises for lovers of the genre.
“Stanlio e Ollio” arrives at the Metropolitan Theater in Catania for “A 4 Star Season – Gilberto Idonea” on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 April (Saturday at 5.30pm and 9pm, Sunday at 5.30pm). A musical comedy without brains” by Sabrina Pellegrino and Claudio Insegno, staged by Federico Perrotta and Claudio Insegno with Valentina Olla, Sabrina Pellegrino, Franco Mannella, Giacomo Rasetti, Federica De Riggi. A musical comedy inspired by the life of the inventors of laughter, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, better known as Laurel & Hardy, the most famous comedy couple of all time.
A great talent of European world music will be the protagonist on 19 and 20 April at the Monk Jazz Club in Catania in Palazzo Scammacca del Murgo, in Piazza Scammacca 1, for the 2024 spring season. On the stage of the Catania jazz club – Friday 19 , at 9.30pm, and on Saturday 20 April, both at 7pm and 9.30pm – the Dutch singer Raquel Kurpershoek will be joined by the Caserta pianist Alessandro Crescenzo and the Dutch drummer Danny Rombout. The concerts are promoted by the Darshan cultural association with the contribution of Nuovo Imaie – The rights of artists, the collecting founded and managed by artists.
An event organized by the LEAF CULTURAL ASSOCIATION in co-organization with the Municipality of Catania and with the patronage of the “Steve Jobs” Higher Technical Institute for Information and Communication Technologies Foundation. The exhibition, from 5 to 28 April 2024, will be open to visitors from Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 12:30 and from 15:30 to 18:00 and will have extraordinary openings on Sundays which will be communicated from time to time .
The theater association “Sotto il Tocco” is ready to raise the curtain and reveal “its” secrets to the audience in the theater. Directed by Michele Russo and Luca Parisi, there are three appointments with the brilliant comedy “Do Friends Have No Secrets?” by Antonello Costa, appreciated artist, complete comedian. A character loved by the Italian public for his artistic abilities: he sings, dances and creates all the numbers in his comic repertoire. His is the comedy that “Sotto il Tocco” will bring to the stage at the Theater in via Ravanusa, 18 in San Giovanni La Punta for three events: Saturday 20 April at 8.30 pm, Sunday 21 April at 6 pm and Sunday 28 April at 6 pm.

New Life, an exhibition that aims to deal with art at 360 degrees. This is the leitmotif of the new exhibition project promoted by Claudia Cannizzo and Marta Emilia Di Mauro, the two founders of the Fil Rouge Project. On the occasion of the inauguration of the physical headquarters of the Fil Rouge Project company, Art Gallery | Auction House | Cultural Hub, a contemporary art exhibition involving multiple artists of Sicilian origins or currently resident in Sicily will be presented to the public, with the aim of conveying and enhancing the works and work of these authors. The exhibition will be open to visitors every day from 12 April to 31 May 2024. The gallery will respect the following visiting hours: from Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 1pm, and from 4.30pm to 7.30pm; on Saturdays from 5pm to 7pm.
In the premises of the former central slaughterhouse in Catania, the Antispecista association L’Arca di Natalia, together with AnimaLiberAction, Spazio Antispecista and Rete 1°aiuto CT will screen the docu-film that everyone is talking about: “Food for profit” by Giulia Innocents. The screening is free and will be held on April 19th at 8.00 pm (with entry at 7.30 pm), in a room of the Eco Hostel, in Via Fornai, 44 in Catania, in the historic center. Reservation is mandatory and, for those who want it, there is the possibility of also reserving seasoned bread, the proceeds of which will be donated entirely to Natalia’s Ark, an anti-speciesist shelter for free animals.
A new educational laboratory of Il piccolo chiassoso, spassoso, club of Officine Culturali at the Benedictine Monastery of Catania. On Sunday 21 April 2024 at 10.30 the appointment is with “Recipes to touch: special ingredients”. After admiring the colorful kitchens of the Benedictine monks and after having retraced the long and fascinating history of one of the foods often present on our tables, boys and girls will get their hands on the dough by experimenting with the simple gestures of preparing bread.
Another enjoyable and overwhelming show for the artistic couple formed by the actors Cosimo Coltraro and Emanuele Puglia. After the successful experiences of The Dawn of the Third Millennium, Il calapranzi and Born in Black and White, the two actors from Catania, who have been linked for years by a winning artistic and human partnership, they try their hand at Maurizio IV by Edoardo Erba, among the most brilliant playwrights of his generation. A text that seems almost “sewn” for them and which arrives on stage directed by Federico Magnano San Lio.
