VENICE – Fortunato Ortombina says goodbye to La Fenice and will be the superintendent of the Scala theater in Milan.
Fortunato Ortombina will be designated superintendent of La Scala in Milan from September 2024alongside Piermarini’s current number one, Dominque Meyer, whose role has been renewed until August 2025. This is what the board of directors decided at this morning’s meeting.
«After a series of reflections and discussions with the government, the proposal that I brought to the board of directors today is the renewal of Dominique Meyer’s role until August 1, 2025», said the mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, at the end of the meeting of the Scala board of directors, of which he is president. «The board thus decides on a matter relating to our statute: as already happened when we designated Meyer, this renewal will have to be confirmed by the new board which will come into operation in February 2025. In our statute there is a suspension issue, but we have already gone through it and I don’t think there will be any problems”, explained Sala. As for the current superintendent of the La Fenice theater in Venice, «Ortombina will prepare in these months and Meyer will prepare everything to make his work easier. He will be formally designated from September 1, 2024″, said the mayor, highlighting that “the role of designated superintendent is an operational role, not a declaration of principle. Therefore it will also have to be operational in Milan. We also do this in agreement with Ortombina.”
Minister Sangiuliano
«An excellent solution, the result of institutional collaboration and the awareness that the Teatro alla Scala is a prestigious symbol of the nation that projects a positive Italy in the world». This was declared by the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano. «With the arrival of Fortunato Ortombina, a new phase begins which he himself will be called upon to outline and build. A linear and appropriate CV: he did very well at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice and I am sure he will do even better in Milan. After three foreign superintendents, Ste’phane Lissner, Alexander Pereira and Dominique Meyer, an Italian returns to La Scala and this happens just a few months after the consecration of the art of opera singing as a world heritage site by UNESCO”, he concludes the minister.
