«The fact that after 30 years a minister of education arrives in Potenza honors me because it gives the idea of the school of listening that I am following». This was the consideration with which the Minister of Education and Merit Giuseppe Valditara began his meeting with the students of the “Busciolano” and “Giorgi” institutes of the Lucanian capital, and of the “P. Berardi” of Melfi (Potenza).

A visit which for the minister meant witnessing “a change of direction focused on the issues of listening”.

«Speaking with teachers, managers, kids – he wanted to point out – is really important to understand in which direction to direct certain reforms, because the school puts the students at the centre, the constitutional school on which I insist values the students. Since I took office there have been important investments for Basilicata: 220 million euros, of which 154 for construction alone and six million for the ‘Southern Agenda’. There is also money for inclusion, an issue on which I fight a lot because we need to provide equal training opportunities for all children, regardless of where they live.”

Regarding the problem of school sizing in Basilicata, Valditara explained that «it is a problem that receives the utmost attention. A school will never be closed. Indeed, where there were regencies we created assistant principals with teachers exempted from service.”

Returning to national issues, Valditara confirmed that «a further effort was made to extend the contracts of ATA staff, after negotiations with the European Commission which did not allow us to use Pnrr funds for this reason. We have found another 14 million because we believe that these personnel are an important resource for implementing the ‘Southern Agenda’ and the Pnrr”.

After underlining that «the South responded very well to the ‘4+2’ reform which for me is strategic because it means providing employment opportunities and guarantees qualified technicians to the Italian entrepreneurial system» on the Made in Italy high school the minister concluded: « was launched on December 27th, there has been no orientation yet, but the overall result is encouraging. With more time, guidance and training, we will have success next year which will go hand in hand with the ‘4+2’ reform which for me is strategic because it means providing employment opportunities and guarantees qualified technicians to the Italian entrepreneurial system”
